alternate appraoches to exam
questions rather than merely
repeating material taught in
school.
Students need to learn how
to apply their math and ver-
bal skills to this kind of exam.
Those who prepare in ad-
vance can expect to raise
their SAT scores by 50 to 100
points, and increases of 150 to
200 points are not
uncommon.
SAT preparation can begin
before the preliminary test
(the PSAT), which many
students take in the fall of the
junior year, or before the SAT,
in spring of the junior year or
the fall of the senior year.
Students who usually panic
on standardized tests should
seek help before they take
their first exam.
A perfect performance is
not necessary to get a high
score on the SAT. Although
answering half of the ques-
tions correctly on an algebra
test would earn a failing
grade, the same percentage of
right answers on the SAT is
likely to result in an above-
average score. A student's
fear should decrease if he
knows it is okay to skip some
questions and make some
mistakes.
The aspiring test-taker can
develop tunnel vision and see
a high SAT score as the only
gateway to a good college. But
most colleges consider other
factors, such as grades and
levels of course work, when
making admission decisions.
No matter what your
teenager's SAT scores are,
there are many colleges that
will be happy to have him.
Finally, you should counsel
your child to look to the
future. It may seem hard for
him to believe, but 10 years
from now, his SAT scores will
have little bearing on the suc-
cess of his career or the quali-
ty of his life.

One of the main events of
the Temple Beth El Religious
School is the fifth grade
Tzedakah Workshop. Temples
and synagogues from the en-
tire community will par-
ticipate March 13, along with
30 Jewish Agencies.
Through a game-like set-
ting, parents and students
gain a better understanding
of how Jews work together.
The fifth grade also
presents a model Seder at the
