"The United States is the
only Western nation that does
not have some form of
uniform paid infant care
leave available for working
parents," Dr. Avgar points
out. "Given the high cost of
quality infant day care, more
information is needed to
determine if paid infant care
leaves would be more cost ef-
fective in the long run."

conscientiously check that
their youngsters have the
right vaccinations to protect
them from infectious
diseases.
Children entering day care
programs need protection too,
including the HIB vaccine —
the vaccination for
Haemophilus influenza
bacteria which causes ear in-
fections and cold-like il-
lnesses with high fever.
Children under 24 months
are particularly vulnerable to
the bacteria which can cause
mental retardation.
But vaccines are needed —
and often forgotten — by col-
lege students and older
adults.
"Adults in good health,
though extremely conscien-
tious about immunizing their
children, can be remarkably
unaware of the status of their
own immunizations," FDA
Commissioner Frank E.
Young, M.D., observes.
As a result, measles can
sweep through college cam-
puses when their students are
not properly protected.
Half the men and women
over 50 lack immunization to
deadly tetanus and
diphtheria. And greater vac-
cine use in older Americans
could reduce the toll of
pneumonia and influenza.
(About 90 percent of the
deaths from these diseases oc-
cur in adults over 65.)
