Bicycles are one of the most
hazardous vehicles on the
road today, according to the
Consumer Product Safety
Commission. Yet, almost all
children ride bicycles.
Dr. Modena Wilson, assis-
tant professor of pediatrics at
Johns Hopkins, along with
the American Academy of
Pediatrics' (AAP) Committee
on Accident and Poison
Prevention, urges parents to
take an active role in preven-
ting bicycle injuries by
teaching children proper safe-
ty techniques, by encouraging
the use of helmets, and by
changing attitudes toward
bicycles from that of a "toy"
to that of a_"first vehicle."
According to the National
Safety Council, over 1,000
bicycle riders died in colli-
sions with motor vehicles in
1984, and nearly 400,000
children (age 1 to 14) were
treated for bicycle-related in-
juries in U.S. hospital
emergency rooms in 1985.
The most common cause of
death is head injury. Serious
head injury can occur when
the bicyclist crashes with a
' motor vehicle or simply falls
from the bike. Serious head
injury has been reduced in
other recreational activities
such as football and ice
hockey through the use of pro-
tective helmets. However,
while many adult bicyclists
use helmets, use among
children riding bicycles is ex-
tremely low.
The following guidelines for
parents are recommended:
• Buy your child a helmet
and appropriately sized bicy-
cle. Oversized bicycles can be
dangerous because they are
more difficult to control.
• Keep the bicycle in good
repair.
• Prohibit riding double.
When ready for street
riding, parents should insist
children obey the "rules of
the road":
• Obey all traffic signals
and stop signs.
• Ride to the right of the
road, with traffic.
• Don't ride at night.
• Always wear a helmet.
