Benz summed it up as "capi-
talism at its worst."
Jewish leaders agree.
Synagogue Council of
America spokesman Gunther
Lawrence, who has been
directly involved in the
Jewish response to the Pope's
visit, decried the novelties as
"offensive, unnecessary, out of
place and an insult to one of
the major faiths of the world.
One can disagree with the
Pope on issues, but that is dif-
ferent from mocking him," in-
sists Lawrence.
"Absolutely trivializes and
cheapens the Pope's visit,
which is supposed to be a
high moral experience,"
declares Rabbi Marc Tanen-
baum, international director
of the American Jewish Com-
mittee, who has just com-
pleted consultations at the
Vatican about reconciliation
with the Jewish community.
He adds, "I myself am of-
fended. It's a most distasteful
and insensitive business for
anyone to be in."
Paul Laub, creator of the
Clint Eastwood-John Paul
novelties, argues that the
Archdiocese of Monterey
doesn't object to his t-shirts.
But Jim Cooney of the Mont-
erey Archdiocese' Committee
for the Papal Visit, makes his
view clear: "I find such
t-shirts offensive, and we
would like to see it stopped,
but there is nothing we can
do. In this country, people
who want to make a buck
can't be stopped."
It would be a mistake to
believe that Catholics aren't
engaged in some of the same
enterprises. Jay Berman of
Detroit's Archdiocese reports,
"I know some little old
Catholic ladies making but-
tons with the Pope wearing a
Detroit Tiger's baseball hat
with the inscription, 'bless
you boys: It seems you scratch
America and you find an en-
trepreneur." Sister Rita Benz
of Mundelein College in
Chicago adds with a giggle,
"Don't tell yourself there
aren't some good Irish Catho-
lics out there doing the same
thing."
Quite right. Lebow's part-
ner in the sprinkler business,
Peter Gahan, 24, is Catholic.
So is Dennis Poplin, Danny
Geisler's partner in the San
Antonio papal ring project.
Even irreverent entre-
preneurs such as Paul Laub
have shown they.know how to
market a tasteful product.
Among Laub's inventory is a
sedate papal photo album
decorated with a respectful
picture of John Paul that
would appeal to any good
Catholic. "Problem is, they
don't sell the t-shirts do,"
comments Laub.
