Jewish View
Of Nicaragua

New York (JTA) — A group
of 20 American Jews who
spent two weeks on a fact-
finding tour of Nicaragua
with Witness For Peace — a
Washington-based, interfaith
organization committed to
nonviolence, as well as in-
dependence from the
Nicaraguan government —
reports that they were unable
to substantiate charges of
systemic anti-Semitism by
the Sandinista government.
The Jewish Witness for
Peace delegation, comprising
men and women ages 24-55,
was in Nicaragua from March
10-24 in order to, according to
a report, "learn more about
education, the economy,
religion, the infrastructure,
health care and political ex-
pression in Nicaragua under
a Sandinista government;
observe the impact of U.S.
foreign policy on the
Nicaraguan people and the
government of Nicaragua; in-
vestigate charges of systemic
anti-Semitism; to witness and
share in the daily lives of peo-
ple living in a war zone."
The delegation members
returned unanimous in their
condemnation of the Contra
rebels, whom the group
charges with kidnapping and
murder of civilians, terroriz-
ing the Nicaraguan people
and dismantling their life-
support system. The group
witnessed firsthand results of
Contra attacks in which en-
tire towns' power and water
systems were destroyed.
Townspeople recounted for
them long lists of family
members kidnapped and
presumed dead.

Licensing Law
Affects Doctors

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A group of
Soviet Jewish physicians is
reconsidering plans to im-
migrate to Israel due to a new
Israeli law requiring all new-
immigrant doctors to under-
go professional tests before
being licensed to practice
medicine in this country, it
was reported last week.
Ephraim Feinblum, chair-
man of the Association of
Immigrants from the Soviet
Union in Israel, said he
received this news over the
phone from Soviet Jewish ac-
tivists in Moscow. "This
amendment will have disas-
trous consequences for aliya,"
he said.
The Health Ministry said
some recent immigrant doc-
tors have shown a low profes-
sional level, so the tests are
necessary.
