FRIDAY. AUG. 28. 1987

Shanik-Fleischer Forum
Series will be held Sept. 13-14
on the Ann Arbor campus of
the University of Michigan.
Its theme is "The Quest for
Utopia: Jews in the Political
World."
Edward I. Koch, mayor of
New York City, will open the
conference 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13
in Rackham Lecture Hall,
with reflections on ethnic
politics in the contemporary
American city. An all-day
symposium will begin at 9
a.m. Sept. 14 on Jewish
political ideas and institu-
tions in different historical
epochs. Prominent scholars
from American and Israeli
universities will discuss
Jewish political ideals and
practices in the ancient and
medieval periods and in
modern Western and Eastern
Europe. These meetings will

take place in Rackham
Assembly Hall.
The final session of the con-
ference will be a colloquium
of political practitioners and
theorists on the topic of "Jews
in American Politics," to be
held in Rackham Am-
phitheater 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14.
The speakers will include a
number of elected officials,
political scientist Daniel
Elazar, and political consul-
tant David Garth.
The Shanik-Fleischer
Forum is sponsored by the
College of Literature, Science
and the Arts and the Program
in Judaic Studies at the
University of Michigan and
the Anti-Defamation League.
It is made possible by a grant
from the Shirley and William
R. Fleischer Foundation of
New York. All of the sessions
are free and open to the
general public.

Midrasha Offers Degree
Certificate Programs

The Midrasha-College of
Jewish Studies offers several
programs leading to teaching
certification as well as
bachelor's and master's
degrees in Hebrew Literature.
There are currently 12
teachers working towards
completion of requirements
for teaching certificates, two
of whom plan to be certified
this fall.
Candidates for teaching cer-
tification may choose from
two programs of study. The
first is a 12-credit-hour pro-
gram in conjunction with the
Reform College of Jewish
Studies. It offers a broad
general background in Judaic
studies including Bible,
Jewish History, Hebrew,
Modern Israel, Jewish
Philosophy, Life Cycle, Prayer,
Reform Judaism and Jewish
Education.
This course of study can
also lead to fulfillment of re-
quirements for the. Bachelor
of Jewish Eduction with an
additional 12 credit hours of
course work in these areas of
study including a concentra-
tion of six credits in one of
three major areas: Hebrew
Studies, Social Studies or
Religious Education.
The second program
leading to certification for
Hebrew teachers is for those
with Hebrew language profi-
ciency and a strong Judaic
studies background. A total of
36 credit hours must be ac-
cumulated in both a Judaica

core as well as in modern
Jewish pedagogy.
This certificate may also be
applied to the Bachelor of
Hebrew Literature degree
which is nationally recogniz-
ed by the National Board of
Licensing of JESNA —
Jewish Education Service of
North America.
There also is a graduate
level program, which current-
ly has eight students working
towards Master of Hebrew
Literature degrees.
The Midrasha also is a col-
lege of life-long learning. A
life long learning certificate
can now be earned by those
students accumulating 24
credits in Judaic-Hebraic
studies.
For information about the
degree or certification pro-
grams, contact Phyllis Doms-
tein, 354-1050.
