The day was to promote marriage which in Judaism is looked upon as a holy act. As far as origins, one just needs to look and read the book of Judges (19:21) and see how the observance originated. After the civil war between the tribe of Ben- jamin and the other 11 tribes, it was decreed that no one could marry the daughters of the tribe of Benjamin and on- ly after the tribe of Benjamin repented that this was an- nulled and it was on Tu b'Av that the decree was revoked . . . This is the origination and it is not from a pagan or goyish observance that had to do with the summer solstice. That point is a complete falsehood. Another point is that nowhere does it state that on this date the Pharisses (Perushim) defeated the Saduccees (Tzedukim) during the Second Temple time. It is true these two sects were at odds with each other over many political reasons but as far as a civil war and one destroying the other, there is no recording of such. Finally, I can remember as a young boy and even growing up through the yeshiva, that I and my peers always recognized Tu b'Av by not reciting the Tachanun (penitential prayer that is said daily except on joyous oc- casions) in the davening. So it has always been recognized by the Orthodox as just a minor holiday . . . but it has not been totally disregarded as the author implies. One of them touches on the role of Israel so often mentioned by the witnesses. What motivated Israel to take part in the actions and transactions? The answer is that Israel is deeply concern- ed about the fate of 25,000 Jews held captive by the Khomaniacs. If the Reaganauts were moved by the plight of a dozen or so hostages, how much the more was Israel troubled by the fact that the Iranians have almost Hitleristically been oppressing their Jewish residents. It will be remembered that one of the Ayatollah's first ac- tions was to turn the onetime Israel embassy in Teheran over to the PLO, a band of bandits intent on the elimina- tion of Israel. Reports out of Iran indicate that the plight of the nation's Jews is indeed dire. One story has it that the Iranians have dragooned teenaged Jews in- to the interminable war with Iraq. They have become helpless cannon fodder. And the Iranians have been but- chering members of the Baha'i, according to some reports. So we can understand the reaction of Israel when it was informed by U.S. operatives that there might be a chance to win and woo some moderate Iranians who reportedly might bring about a new regime in that country Rabbi Samuel Silver Delray Beach, Fla. I LOCAL NEWS I Jewish Schools Are Merged The United Hebrew Schools and the Beth Shalom High School have merged into the Community Jewish High School.
