Eleven years later, Torme's, Lament to Love was on the Hit Parade. No laments from Tonne. After all, no one pushed him into the limelight, he says. And, after all, how many teens were able to form a band for Chico Marx and then perform with it? Torme has a lot to be greatful for, and he is greatful that he had parents who "encouraged me but were not the pushy types." Torme's talent pushed for him. Some 35 years after hosting a television talk show, the urbane Torme has become somewhat of a television sensa- tion all over again. Torme has appeared recently on "Night Court." Star Harry Anderson does not hide his ad- miration for the gifted Thrme. But acting is nothing new for the entertainer who won an Emmy nomination 30 years ago for his part in the "Playhouse 90" production of "The Come- dian." In 1963 Torme returned to television in another mode — writing special material for "The Judy Garland Show," an experience which led to his book, The Other Side of the Rainbow. But television was not the key to Torme's success. Singing, writing and recording have been significant elements as well as performing at such locales as Las Vegas. Despite the good life and Grammy Awards for hit albums ("An Evening With George Shearing and Mel Ibrme," "Top Drawer"), Torme admits life has not been one big blast and high note. his Working on autobiography is a reminder, he says, of the pain of the past. "It was very tough for me to do," he says. "It's the one book I've written" — there have been three others — "that is so pain- ful in spots that I had to lay it aside." Indeed, admits Torme, "it's taken me seven years to do it. It's just very tough when you're re-living the divorces, the ear- ly part of my career" when he was a favorite target for blister- ing reviews. "Oh, the press roasted me;' he recalls. "But I probably deserved it. I had a lot to over- come and it was extremely painful?' But overcome the painful past he has, and Torme is pleased to cite the past decade "as the greatest," referring to critical- ly applauded performances at the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall.
