Rialto Has Acclaimed Record Of Serving Food In Ferndale DANNY RASKIN Local Columnist y OU COULD -GET a complete dinner from soup to nuts for 25 cents . . . The Woodward Avenue of today wasn't a main street . . . just a gravel road . . . The City of Ferndale didn't become one yet until the following year. This was 1926 . . . 61 years ago . . . when Rialto Cafe on Woodward and 9 Mile in Fern- dale first opened its doors. Seating then was for just 30 people with no kitchen .. . just a grill in the restaurant area itself. Next door was a grocery .. . and next to that a little office . . . As the restaurant grew in popularity, both were taken . .. with the kitchen put in back . . . Today, the seating is for 175, including a six-stool counter and a six-seater bar . . . 10 persons work in the large, clean, kitchen of gleam- ing stainless steel, walk-in cooler,-freezer, storage room, etc. A prime asset at Rialto Restaurant has been the loyalty of its customers .. . Many restaurants have its moments of adversity, but Rialto has always overcome them . . . and the customers continue to return. But loyal attendance isn't the only thing that makes Rialto tick with such rapidi- ty . . . The food is all home cooked on the premises .. . very wholesome . . . Portions are large . . . and the service is unequaled . . . The latter, for example, has people like Marie Marsac, who has been with Charlie & Frank Pappas 29 years . . . She had been there a year before the likeable brothers took over . . . and is their manager .. . Frank's sweet, very talented, pretty and gracious young daughter, Loula Pappas, is hostess, cashier, etc. . . . and excellent waitresses like Naomi Collinsworth, One of the best, make up a well- trained staff of waitpersons. When Charlie and Frank took over Rialto, there were no cocktails served . . . Oakland County was dry at that time . . . They didn't receive their liquor license until 1972 . . . and were among the first to receive one. However, the food and prices at Rialto are what keeps bringing people back . .. You can get a drink at any place with a license, but not the kind of food or prices like Rialto. Eight years ago, Rialto was acclaimed as one of the top restaurants in the State of Michigan with an under $5 per person menu . and three star rating . . . The prices haven't gone up very much since . . . and its wholesome home cooking is still very much' in demand. Rialto, with its booths and tables in three dining areas, never closes . . . It is open seven days a week . . . Mon.- Thurs. 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Fri. & Sat. 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The huge variety menu in- cludes American, Italian and Greek favorites . . . There's no such thing at Rialto as pro- cessed food . . . Charlie and Frank don't know from such things . . . and certainly are against serving it . . . As ex- ample, their kitchen staff cuts its own potatoes for American fries or hash browns . . . and cook them in pure vegetable oil without any semblance of grease . . . Fresh turkey is sliced directly off the bird .. . It's nothing for Rialto to use up 10 and more 32-pound turkeys in a week . . . that's how much they sell of this very big favbrite. People are given their choice of regular or Greek salads . . . at no extra charge . . . The menu ranges from fresh seafood to bar-b-q ribs, chicken, shrimp, steaks, chops, prime ribs, etc., etc., etc. This being the 61st anniver- sary, Charlie and Frank wanted to do it up in a big way . . . and sure are . . . Through August, people get their choice of any two din- ners on the menu for one price ($8.95) . . . complete from salad to dessert and beverage . . . seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. . . . Can't recall ever seeing a deal like this . . . it could well be a first in the restaurant business. - So nice to know that a true family restaurant with such a historic background is still in our midst . . . and better still that it continues to serve the same wholesome food at low prices as ever . . . Small , reason that Rialto is con- tinually rated among Michigan's top restaurants at very reasonable prices that hover around the $5 mark. RICKY DEE (Drapkin) Show at BBC West Steak House, (formerly Kansas City Steak House,) on 14 Mile Rd., a block east of John R and just east of Oakland Mall, is Aug. 28, 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. . . . It'll have Ricky singing his songs, the Louie Marr Quartet and the Loving Cup for dancing . . . in continuous music . . . plus Allan Schwartz, "The Singing Win- dow-Washer" among guests. ONE OF DETROIT'S top jazz personalities and a top local fuller fashion boutique . . . What do they have in com- mon? . . . The Ortheia Barnes Collection will be modeled as folks sip wine and nibble on cheese . . . tomorrow, 12 noon to 6 p.m. . . . at Valentina's in Harvard Row, 11 Mile and Lahser . . . Ortheia may not sing then, but she'll have two of her musicians there .. . and chances are high that very good friend songstress Aretha Franklin will also be in attendance . . . plus Roz Di Jardean, local designer.
