PERFORMANCE CAR November 1986*

,

The new breed Jaguar XJ6 sedan moves
swiftly and surely.
With unique "pendulum" isolation, its
fully independent suspension tunes out
road imperfections without turning
spongy. It achieves a near perfect balance
of agile handling and supple ride.
Its new double overhead cam six cylin-
der engine, with 24 valves, provides
authoritative response and extraordinary
high speed capabilities. Yet its serenely
silent cabin surrounds the driver and pas-

sengers with the Old World -splendor of
supple, fragrant leather and fine wood.
If you'd like to experience all of the
world class qualities of the new XJ6,
please call or visit our showroom. We'll be
happy to arrange a test drive.

ENJOY TOMORROW. BUCKLE UP TODAY.

MAPLE

BETWEEN CROOKS AND COOLIDGE
OPEN MONDAY AND
THURSDAY UNTIL 9 P.M.

The course work is in-
dividually tailored, with
remedial classes for those
who need it. On the other
hand, people who come in
already able to use, for exam-
ple, a word processor may be
able to bypass several steps.
The course list, titled Com-
puter Integrated Manufactur-
ing: Robotics and Automation
Literacy, has 90 teaching
modules available.
ACTT has set up a training
center in Farmington Hills,
where it has a classroom, six
work stations, and three
trainers of other teachers.
ACTT will establish in-
plant training sites and train
instructors for any company
that buys the program.
ACTT, at this preliminary
stage, is seeking client com-
panies who are willing to help
underwrite the costs, in con-
junction with governmental
job training funds. But ACTT
is not prepared for individual
requests for training,
although it may in the future
be placed in community
colleges.
One of its first clients is the
John Deere & Company in
Iowa. Says Lutz, "We are star-
ting in Iowa as the John
Deere Company has iden-
tified the need to make Iowa's
unemployed workers com-
petitive in the market. John
Deere went from 32,000
workers to 12,500, and
they've admitted they won't
be rehiring those almost
20,000. The business has
dried up. One of the plants
says it lost its business

because of its lack of automa-
tion."
"In September they are put-
ting in a demonstration site
with four work stations, and
they expect that to grow into
training centers all over
Iowa." Case-Caterpillar and
ALCOA Aluminum are also
participating in the Iowa
program.
Beyond John Deere, ACTT
plans to have 100 work sta-
tions in companies by the
beginning of 1988, primarily
in the Midwest. It is in the
planning stage with several
Detroit automotive
manufacturers.
ACTT will be targeting
three groups of potential
students. According to Brown,
"You have the employed
workers whose plant is being
retooled, and who need
retraining to keep their jobs.
These people need to upgrade
their skill levels. They need to
understand statistics,
geometry, and have better
reading skills than they had."
"The second group are
those who lose their jobs
when the company brings in
automation the
unemployed, the dislocated,
those who don't know where
their next job will be, but
chances are it will be in a
technological environment.
They must have a broad-
based understanding of
technology because they may
be hired by a different
employer with different
machinery."
The third group Brown
talks of is education itself —
teaching students what
