Akiva

be Mort Plotnick, executive
director of the JCC who has
had 12 years of experience
running a camp.
Such experience reflects
on what the camp offers the
children, Rabbi Englander ex-
plained. "They have a phe-
nomenal program, facilities
far beyond anything I would
be able to offer our kids!'
A tennis bubble, swim-
ming pools, canoes and arts
and crafts areas are among
the facilities the campers can
utilize.
The JCC made arrange-
ments to accommodate
specific religious needs.
Akiva requested sex-segre-
gated swim time and for the
first four week session (June
29-July 23) the Akiva kids re-
mained an extra hour while
the boys and girls alternated
between swimming and To-
rah study. During the second
session, swimming for all 400
campers was separated.
The Center agreed to pro-
vide the Akiva campers with
special busing which picks
them up at 8:45 a.m. after
morning prayers at Akiva
and delivers them back to the
school at the end of the day.
Akiva also requested
their own counseling staff,

comprised of Akiva grad-
uates.
During the first session,
18 Akiva kids formed an
autonomous bunk while five
others were interspersed
throughout the other bunks.
Only one bunk of 16 Akiva
campers existed for the se-
cond session.
Initial worries were
dispelled once the program
began. "We were afraid at
first of being segregated!' ad-
mitted Rabbi Englander, "but
we found only warm recep-
tion."
The Akiva presence of-
fered enrichment to the other
campers. Rabbi Meilech
Silberberg of Bais Chabad of
West Bloomfield gave a
special oneg Shabbat for the
whole camp after Tisha b'Av
and all campers benefited
from the special section in the
weekly camp newspaper en-
titled "Akiva Corner," accor-
ding to Rabbi Englander.

He expects a greater turn-
out for next summer and
other long-term benefits.
"Evidently it has established
a name for itself, and I'm sure
these kids have created
friendships they will carry
on?'
