Ida Nudel
Details Work

New York (JTA) — Long-
time refusenik Ida Nudel has
produced a lengthy and
detailed account of her work
as an economist in the tech-
nical evaluation section of a
microbiological institute con-
cerned with the needs of
agriculture and the food in-
dustry, the National Con-
ference on Soviet Jewry
reported last week.
Employed there 16 years
ago until she applied to
emigrate, Nudel, 55, writes
that if her section was con-
cerned with issues other than
food and agriculture, "I was
not and am not aware of
them." She adds that al-
though some sections of the
institute were "closed," her
own work was based on gen-
eral areas, which the auth-
orities have classified as
merely "second-degree securi-
ty."
Told in 1971 by an official at
the Moscow OVIR, "You had
a second-degree security
clearance until September
1971... we know that you do
not possess any secret infor-
mation, but you could have
overheard something," Nudel
was advised that her emigra-
tion "is undesirable until
1977."

Shamir, Hill
Hold Talks

Jerusalem (JTA) — Premier
Minister Yitzhak Shamir was
reportedly "much encour-
aged" last week after a sec-
ond round of talks with
Secretary of State George
Shultz's envoy, Charles Hill,
on aspects of Mideast peace-
making.
Shamir himself told
newsmen he had discussed
with Hill options other than
the international conference,
which he continue to oppose.
Shamir's aides indicated
that the U.S. official had
seemed anxious to explore
with Hill alternative ap-
proaches — and this seemed
to mean a shift by Washing-
ton away from support of the
conference scenario as ad-
vocated by King Hussein of
Jordan, President Mubarak of
Egypt, and Israeli Foreign
Minister Peres.
But Peres aides had a dif-
ferent reading of Hill's trust,
following a lengthy meeting
between the U.S. aide and the
Foreign Minister. They felt
that Shultz, now. that Iran-
gate is easing as a central
preoccupation of the admini-
stration, is keen to push
ahead on the international
conference scenario.
