I

n the wonderful tradi-
tion of all Machus res-
taurants, Foxys West on
Orchard Lake Road south of
Maple is slowly but surely
gaining a grasp on area
diners.
Unlike so many other
restaurants which are in such
a hurry to ring the cash
register without considera-
tion of customers coming
back, Machus Foxys has
taken its time to be certain
everything is exactly as it
should be . . . How grand it
would be if so many other
restaurateurs would be like
owners Robert Machus, Mar-
tin Kreger and John Wood .. .
Their policy continues in the
exact same vein as Robert's
father, Harris, from whom
these three fine gentlemen
bought the very respected.
chain.
Seems as though everytime
I visit Machus Foxys West, it
gets better . . . which says
something . . . my recent lun-
cheon there was again an en-
joyable experience amid the
soft colors, tablecloths and
napkins and intimate
atmosphere.
Overall manager Fred
Nager is quick to please .. .
and hostess Holly Walters
graciously greets and seats
people at lunchtime . . . Our
waitress was again Cecille
Hobson, the fine young lass
whose ingenious method of
having her customers turn
their plastic menu holder on
its side when ready to order
is receiving much favorable
comment.
I lunched with Mary Jo
Cinador, Machus marketing
coordinator, and Nina
Machus, Bob's lovely and
gracious wife.
Mary Jo and Nina had the
cantaloupe lily, chicken salad
with light mayo dressing and
almonds . . . presented in a
melon sculpted in form of a li-
ly . . . and the yummy
Machus apple-spiced muffin
. . . The melons had been
picked by Martin and brought
in by him just that morning.
Bob on the run joined us for
a kiss from wife Nina and a
fast sliced turkey sandwich.
I enjoyed a very delicious
seafood fettucini . . . so fresh
and palatable . . . The presen-
tation of these dishes is
wonderful to see . . . with
fresh greens, fruits, etc. .. .
and the famed Machus train-
ing program for its employees

is most evident.
Nina is that lovely lassie
who led the Madrigal Singers
at a May Michigan Cancer
Foundation benefit in the
home of Doreen and Dave
Hermelin . . . She has taken
the Madrigal Singers to Den-
mark and England and their
popularity continues to grow.
Nina directs vocal music at
Cranbrook-Kingswood
Schools . . . and has appeared
in Oklahoma! with the
Franklin Players; Carousel
and Fiorello at St. Dunstan's
. . . She was musical director
of Fantastics for Janos
Productions.
This past April, Nina did a
Heart To Heart musical to the
music of Rogers and Hart .. .
at Machus Sly Fox in Birm-
ingham . . . to introduce the
Heart To Heart menu at all
Machus restaurants . . . This
September, Thursday even-
ings, she will do a medley of
show tunes covering 15
musicals.
From the moment you park
your car and walk into Foxys
West Restaurant, there is an
air of comfort . . . achieved by
knowing you are in a Machus
restaurant.
IT'S COOL again at
Lowry's Restaurant on Hiller
Road . . . now that owner/chef
Dan Lowry has installed a
new air conditioning unit.
HIDDEN away inside
Franklin Racquet Club on
Northwestern Hwy. is
Sneakers Restaurant . . . a
secret kept by its members
. . . but now open to the public
seven days a week . . . Sum-
mer hours are Monday-
Friday, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.;
Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and
Sunday, 9 a.m. to 12 noon .. .
plus a happy time on Wednes-
day, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with hors
d'oeuvres and reduced drink
prices.
Seating is for about 100
with a round, well-appointed
bar and 16 stools . . . A flam-
ingo wearing sneakers is the
trademark of the restaurant
gaining popularity among the
health-conscious . . . and
there are plenty of them.
By Sept. 9, Sneakers
Restaurant will have a full
breakfast, lunch and dinner
menu . . . Until then, it is
operating with a summer
menu of three fresh
homemade soups, potato
skins, chicken wings, fruit
cup, fruit and cheese tray, six
salads, 1/2-pound ground
round and 11 other sand-
wiches . . . Breakfasts have
omelettes, yogurt, bagels and
rolls.
