The Pike Street Restaurant
Wine and Roses
Starting Thursday, August 6
Meet The Wine Makers
At Our Special Wine Tastings
Every Thursday Evening Thru August
6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Sneakers has an art deco at-
mosphere . . . and is sur-
rounded by windows . . . on
one side overlooking six full-
size tennis courts . . . and
another side with aerobic
classes in action . . . All told,
Franklin Racquet Club has
20 indoor tennis courts and
five outdoors.
Our waitress recently, Amy
Straka, was very efficient and
poilite as I enjoyed a
delightful, relaxing lunch of
cold gazpacho soup (also
comes hot) and chicken
breasts charbroiled, then top-
ped with fresh avocado and
served with bearnaise sauce
. . . A companion had the
vegetarian sandwich of fresh
sauteed veggies topped with
tomato and melted moz-
zarella cheese and served on
pita bread . . . and another
the piled-high white breast
turkey sandwich.
Pat 'Estes is dining room
manager . . . and Mike
Goodale the restaurant
manager.
Back in 1969, owner
Seymour Brode built four full-
size tennis courts . . . But
with a fast-enrolling member-
ship, eight more were
necessary . . . and in 1976,
more renovations to include
12 additional and 20 racquet-
ball courts . . . Then in 1982,
Seymour put in one of the
finest Nautilus Fitness
Centers I've seen, plus an in-
door pool, the aerobic center,
weight area and two squash
courts.
The aerobic instructors and
swimming pool staff are CPR
certified . . . Franklin Rac-
quet Club's state-of-the-art
programmable equipment for
cardiovascular fitness is ex-
cellent . . . among the best .. .
with treadmills, rowing
machines, Stairmasters that
spit out printed computerized
readouts on how you're doing
... _ (remember when they
said walking stairs was not
good for you?), cycles galore
with needed info in front of
you, etc.
Dave Holderness is
Seymour's general manager
. . . and Terry Marchand
assistant manager . . . with
Mary Krasman sales coor-
dinator . . . Those intriguing
Stairmasters, by the way, give
out a pulse reading, how
many calories burned and the
distance one has climbed .. .
It's considered a tremendous
new concept in cardiovascular
training.
Seymour's Franklin Rac-
quet Club has come a long
way since its opening in 1969
. . . with saunas, steams,
jacuzzis, tanning beds, etc. . . .
plus classes in just about
everything necessary for
physical fitness . . . It is slated
to break ground for an out-
door Olympic-size swimming
pool . . . complete with bar
and grill . . . with completion
in summer of '88.
Sneakers Restaurant with
its tropical look . . . mold of
flamingo wearing gym shoes,
palm trees . . . and soft com-
fortable environment, is most
appealing . . . Franklin Rac-
quet Club's dedication to fun
and physical fitness . . . and
Sneakers Restaurant go well
together . . . and being open
to the public gives the
restaurant an added plus.
CARLA Jean Schwartz,
fashion writer for The Jewish
News, writes . . . " Tash Bash
'87', a fashion show and auc-
tion fund-raising event for the
Detroit Institute of Arts, was
a huge success. About 3,000
people attended the gala af-
fair, Aug. 5, at the Westin
Hotel.
"Fall fashions from Hud-
son's highlighted the evening.
Short skirts dominated the
runway. Designer Donna
Karan teamed black skirts,
black knit stockings and
bright pink or red tops.
Carmelo Pomodoro, a new
American designer, showed
taupe hooded sweaters with
matching short skirts. For
evening, black velvet was in
vogue. Men's fashions were by
Giorgio Armani, Ralph
Lauren and Hugo Boss.
Tweeds and twills prevailed."
OPENING concert for
1987-88 season of the Julius
Chajes Music. Fund Concert
Series is Sept. 13, 3:30 p.m. at
the Jewish Community
Center with pianist Louis
Nagel . . . This is the third
season in perpetuating the
music and memory of Julius
Chajes . . . loved and admired
by so many people.
LAWN seating only for
tonight's Johnny Cash and
Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin
Brothers . . . at Meadow
Brook Music Festial .. .
Baldwin Pavilion, Oakland
University near Rochester, 8
p.m.
REMAL'S on W. Nine Mile,
east of Coolidge, is another of
those small places where
folks can get a good meal at
very reasonable prices.
June 11 was first anniver-
sary since Nick and wife An-
drea Mina took over the
restaurant . . . and turned it
into one with Greek, Italian
and American specialties.
Seating is for 92 in the all-
booth setup which has a 90
percent rating on the
Oakland Health Dept. chart
to go along with its home
cooking . . . Most of the dishes
are made to order and Andrea
is best known for her
strawberry shortcake and
cheesecake.
Nick makes all the soups
and sauces and, with Andrea,
does the prepping for son
Philip in Remal's kitchen .. .
Only prime cut meat is sold
and fresh whitefish is gotten
three times a week.
He helped open Dimitri's of
Southfield and the former
Pantelli's in Dearborn . . .
worked for Carl Rosenfeld at
Carl's Chop House, for Les
Gruber at London Chop
House, was at Roostertail and
Barton Hills Country Club in
Ann Arbor . . . Back in the
'60s, Nick owned the Wayne
Parkway Supper Club in
Wayne, Mich. . . a favorite of
the late Les Gruber and then
Governor G. Mennen
Williams, now chief justice of
the Michigan Supreme Court.
Nick and Andrea are
waiting until after vacations
to have its first anniversary
celebration ._. . It is open
seven days a week . . .
Monday-Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 9
p.m.; Saturday, 7 a.m. to 9
p.m.; and Sunday, 7:30 a.m. to
3 p.m.
JAZZ flutist Alexander
Zonjic appears for seventh
straight year tonight on the
outdoor terrace of the Hotel
Pontchartrain at its 6:30
P'Jazz gig.
