most of Cracow's Jews. Mrs.
Yachowitch, herself a devoted
Catholic, then decided to bap-
tize young Shachne and ap-
proached a newly ordained
priest to whom she revealed the
secret of the true identity of
Shachne. The young priest
listened intently to the woman
and asked her what Shachne's
parents wished when they en-
trusted their child to her and
her husband. She told him that
their last request was that the
child be told of his Jewish
origins and returned to his peo-
ple in the event of the parents'
death.
The young priest explained
that it would be unfair to bap-
tize the child and that he would
not perform the ceremony. This
was in 1946. The young priest
became Cardinal Karol Wojyla
of Cracow and in 1978 was
elected by the College of Car-
dinals as Pope John Paul II.
When the Grand Rabbi of
Bluzhov, Rabbi Israel Spiro,
heard the story he commented,
"God has mysterious, wonder-
ful ways unknown to men.
Perhaps it was the merit of sav-
ing a single Jewish soul that
brought about his election as
Pope. It is a story that must be
told."
The time is propitious to tell
the story of the priest who as
Pope referred to Jews as "ir-
revocably the beloved of God."
The Waldheim event, for all its
sadness, must not be allowed to
frustrate the ecumenical pro-
gress of the new era or to
paralyze the prospects for a
brighter future among the
peoples of the world. On the eve
of the Pope's September arrival
to these shores, it is important
to recall his earlier declaration
to Jewish leaders which ex-
pressed "a common determina-
tion to reject all forms of anti-
Semitism and discrimination?'
The world awaits the promise
of the Pope and the healing
powers of word and deed. 0

threaded navels. There's even a squeaker
(but we won't say where). Made of machine

apron and a similar one featuring a
bikini swimsuit.

Jerusalem (JTA) — There
were protests and demonstra-
tions by workers at the
Jerusalem District Electrici-
ty Company (JDEC) Monday
following the Cabinet's deci-
sion Sunday to restrict
JDEC's operations exclusive-
ly to Arab consumers.
The Cabinet approved, by a
vote of 15-5, the recommenda-
tion of Energy Minister
Moshe Shahal to reduce the
scope of the debt-ridden
JDEC's operations so that the
company ceases serving the
new Jewish suburbs.
