Israel." While to many Israel-
supporting non-Haredim
these terms have a positive
connotation, it is important to
note that Haredim use them
in contradistinction to "State
of Israel . . ."
Most of the signatories of
the "Vilification" letter are
rabbis of, or attend
synagogues where the
prayers for the State of Israel
and for the welfare of its
soldiers are omitted from the
service and where, in con-
tradiction to the edict of the
Chief Rabbinate of Israel, on
the 5th of lyar there is no
mention of Yom Haatzmaut
whatsoever.
With regard to the issue of
Haredi support for Israeli
democracy, there is a
monumental difference bet-
ween participating in a
democracy and supporting it.
Though, supposedly, the ma-
jority of Israeli Haredim par-
ticipate in Israeli democracy,
they do so primarily to the ex-
tent of securing government
funds for the parochial in-
terests (which is their right).
Haredi support for democracy
and the State ends where
tolerance for and mingling
with the non-Haredi majority
begins. Note the incredibly
low level of participation of
Haredim in the Israeli armed
forces and their disdain for
alternative community ser-
vice. Also note that the
haredim in Israel have set up
a private school system (also
their right), Chinuch Atzmai,
so that their children will not
be educated in state-run, Or-
thodox schools with state-
supporting Orthodox
children.
• It is Israeli democracy that
protects the rights of the
Haredi minority to omit
prayers for the welfare of the
state and the soldiers who
protect it, and to send their
children to the schools of their
choice (although Haredi eva-
sion of compulsory army du-
ty may be a dereliction of
citizen responsibility). I hope
that the Haredim will always
be careful to extend the same
rights to others. Their record
heretofore is less than
exemplary.

Congressional
Support for PLO
We note that (Michigan
Congressmen George
Crockett, John Conyers and
David Bonoir) have circulated
a letter in opposition to the
Kemp-Mica bill, which man-
dates the closing of the PLO
office in Washington, D.C. and
PLO's observer-mission at the
United Nations.
We do not question their
right to oppose the bill and we
have no illusions that the
facts cited below are likely to
change their minds.
Jon Kimche (in an article in
the Jerusalem Post) offers
compelling evidence that far
from moderating its stance
and moving towards a
negotiating position, Yassir
Arafat and the PLO have
reaffirmed their resolve to
pursue the armed struggle op-
tion vis a vis Israel.
In fact, Mr. Arafat has
reestablished his relations
with the notorious Abu
Nidal, justifiably regarded as
the world's foremost terrorist,
and has given him the
authority to act as Fatah's
agent for "special operations,"
for which the PLO leader did
not want to assume respon-
sibility. The special opera-
tions, as spelled out by Abu
Nidal's spokesman, include a
world-wide assault against
Israel and the United States.
The real question is
whether the U.S. resolve to
wage a relentless war against
terrorism can be reconciled
with our providing hospitali-
ty, legitimacy and a fordm for
an organization known to be
the nerve-center of global
terrorism.

Commenting on the future
of the Tamarack Adventure
Center, the off-season drop-in
"camp" located near Tel-
Twelve Mall, Fisher said he
felt slightly hesitant. "I have
some doubts at this point.
Who is it that we are trying
to reach out to?" He added
that he wondered if such a
project should be the respon-
sibility of some other group
within the community.
Bringing experience and
enthusiasm, Fisher spent his
initial days at the camp
literally trying to get a sense
of the place,"observing, listen-
ing, smelling." Having
directed BBYO in Israel,
Europe and South America,
Fisher's observations of youth
have led him to the conclu-
sion that basically "kids are
all the same."
A five-year plan to reshape
the Fresh Air society is in the
works, he said, yet the essen-
tial goal behind the
blueprints is to help "ki6
(develop) a healthier way with
dealing with each other."
