have professionals who train
and guide you over the rough
spots. Quite often they take
care of legal and accounting
arrangements, source of sup-
plies, equipment purchase
and rental, and the many un-
forseen problems that do
arise. Many of them have a
hotline where you can lean on
someone to get you out of
trouble. Of course, they
charge a royalty, but it's
usually worth it for the ongo-
ing input and supervision.
Incidentally, there are
many kinds of businesses
available from franchisers.
They include print shops, op-
tical business (you can hire
professionals), 7-11's; the list
is endless. Every year there's
a franchise fair here. You can
go crazy trying to choose from
all these wonderful oppor-
tunities. It's a good idea to go,
see, interview, read, learn.
The information is free. Just
be cautious about giving
anyone a good faith deposit or
"earnest money."
Shop, compare, study, learn
and see your attorney with a
model contract before you
write a check for anything.
Don't accept projections as
fact. Find out on what basis
these numbers were compil-
ed. Has an accounting firm
examined them? Which firm?
Is there a guarantee?
Sometimes buying a
business or practice can be
the easiest and most pro-
fitable way to get into
business. There are
businesses for sale and many
times for legitimate reasons.
Owners of businesses who
want to retire often have to
sell when no one in the fami-
ly is interested. Quite often
these may be obtained at ad-
vantageous prices or terms.
Is the neighborhood still
good? Is there room for im-
provement if a younger per-
son steps in? Will the present
owner stay on for three to six
months to make sure you
know all the customers and
suppliers? Do you have to buy
the accounts receivable? Will
the insurance company in-
sure you? Will the bank let
you take over his loan?
If you cover all these ques-
tions it might be the easiest
way to go into business. Don't
hesitate to negotiate
everything. Selling a business
is rough. Take advantage of
your willingness to step in.
Try to reduce your risk every
way you can forsee.
