Franklin Hills Club's
Heritage Is Recalled
1
APPY ANN-
IVERSARY
everybody. I'm
glad to be here tonight. In
fact, at my age, I'm glad to be
anywhere.
"I'm one of Franklin Hills'
recycled members and, as the
club's earliest living ex-
presidents, I bring you
greetings."
It was the 60th anniversary
party of Franklin Hills Coun-
try Club . . . and Leonard
Simons of Simons Michelson
Zieve Advertising, was guest
speaker . . . reminding
everyone of the club's grand
heritage and bringing much
laughter interspersed with
his memorabilia.
"If you think 60 years is
old," said Leonard, "well
yesterday was my 83rd birth-
day. Now that's old! It was also
the 70th anniversary of my
bar mitzvah. Aren't you glad
to, have all that important
information?
"They tell me there are
three ways you can tell you
are getting old. The first is
loss of memory. I've forgotten
what the other two are."
Leonard told of much
history about Franklin Hills
and did it in a jolly spirit .. .
"In the early days, we played
golf with clubs that had
names we no longer use.
Spoon, Mashie, Niblick,
Cleek. I hit 'em long and
lousy. I used to zigzag all over
the 18 holes, but it was fun.
"I remember my first time
out at Franklin Hills. Our
Scotch pro joined me. His
name was Hughie Bain. He
asked me about my game and
I said I thought I could 'break
100: When we finished play-
ing, he said to me, 'Simons,
you know you could have
broken 100 — if you had stop-
ped playing after the 15th
hole.' You know how old that
joke is. But the joke was on
him. I meant after nine holes.
"In the 55 years I've been a
member of our club, I won on-
ly one handicap tournament.
It was way back in 1934. Just
my mazel — that was the year
the club went broke and
couldn't afford trophies."
