Papa pointed to me and yelled, "He has come. The Promised One has come. He is our son, our son!" Mama was always the cool one. She scoffed. "It can't be." Papa demanded, indignant- ly, as though Mama had broken all Ten Command- ments, "And why not? Are we not of the tribe of Isaac, descended from Abraham?" Mama answered. "It's not this one. Forget it. He couldn't tie his shoelaces un- til he was seven years old." Papa shouted, "I have seen with my own eyes and heard with my own ears — oh ye of little faith! I know a miracle when I see it!" Mama shrugged and went back to her kitchen. Papa hoisted me on his shoulders. I thought my head would poke through the ceil- ing. Papa marched out of our flat. At the door, a crowd of people had gathered, worried about the howls that had come from the apartment. Papa shouted his explana- tion as he marched down the stairs. His enthusiasm was catching. Papa bragged of what I had done, exag- gerating a hundredfold my achievement. Papa and his fellow Jews, already waiting over 5,000 years for me, shouted, "On to the rabbi." In wild disorder we straggled to the synagogue, screaming to the high heavens and to the curious onlookers on the fifth floor that the Messiah was here, at last. That short march to the shul was the highlight of my life. The rabbi was in his cubby- hole study, poring over a dusty, yellowed book. Papa was finally able to explain, over the shouts of my dis- ciples, what the fuss was all about. The rabbi scratched his beard. Although I was an adept student, he had caught me fooling around when I thought he wasn't watching. On occasion, he had conferred the title "bondeet" on me. The rabbi was skeptical about Papa's claim. After 5,000 pa- tient years, he decided to spend a few more minutes in- vestigating the alleged miracle. He asked me a question in Hebrew. I didn't know any Hebrew except by rote. I know Yiddish, so when my Papa asked what the rabbi said, I had to confess I didn't know. The rabbi picked me apart in another minute. He then disabused Papa of his notion that I was the Mes- siah, intimating in very ex- plicit Yiddish that I was on- ly a high grade moron who would be lucky to make Bar Mitzvah. We were a sad-looking bunch going home after that. Nobody said very much. When we got to our flat, my bitterly disappointed Papa yelled at me for making a fool of him. He regretfully decided that he was required to "potch" my behind. This was serious. Papa was a hard potcher. I mean, he put his heart and soul into his potching. Mama didn't let him hit us in the head so he gave it all he had to our bot- toms. You think I'm not smart? You want proof that the Jews have an instinct for survival? Know what I said then, and saved my life? "Papa," I said plaintively, "you wouldn't spank the Messiah, would you?" The accumulated pain of over 5,000 years of waiting and suffering dissolved in a gale of laughter. My Papa picked me up and tossed me over his head. "Zie a gitter kind," he laughed, and I was a good kid for the rest of my life. ❑ Robert Weinstein is a writer who lives in Florida. mml LOCAL NEWS Imm Council Post Sought By Moss Richard Moss Richard Moss of Southfield has announced his candidacy for a seat on the Southfield City Council.
