ROSH HASHANAH GREETINGS PICK.. THEGREETING OF YOUR CHOICE struggling artisans, children who knew hunger, unknown scholars who knew the secrets of the Torah, mothers and fathers who preferred poverty in the Holy City to palaces anywhere on earth. There is an old saying in Jerusalem that the Western Wall has ears. And the old alleys and dwellings have memories and mouths that whisper their stories to us. Can you hear them? The publishers add to their recommendation that Rabbi Sonnenfeld "has Jerusalem in his veins, his mind and heart brim with its traditions and the stories of its people." It is clear, therefore, why Jerusalem Gems is highly recommended. Mesorah publicatins and its ArtScroll series continue to issue highly-traditional works, including commen- taries on the Midrash, Mishna, Bible. One of their current additions to these valuable works is The Mishna: Seder Mezikin. It is a second volume in this series edited by Rabbi Yejezkel Dan- ziger and translated with commentary by Rabbi Matis Roberts. Justine Polier - Remembered It is as a serious personal loss that I write this tribute to Justine Wise Polier. She was a remarkable lady, an able jurist and a noble social scientist, that she ac- quired the good qualities of an extraordinary father and an accomplished mother. I must add that she shared many of the good qualities of an able brother, James Water- man Wise. From their mother, Louise Waterman Wise, both son and daughter learned her artistic qualities. From her father, Stephen S. Wise, she gained a spirit of courage, a determined will to battle for the rights of the oppressed. From her mother she at- tained a loyalty to a great cause — that of protecting the rights of children in whatever oppressive conditions into which they may be forced. It was with her husband Shad Polier as well as her father that she shared leader- ship in the American Jewish Congress. It was one of the causes in which I found myself involved with her on numerous occasions. If the term "giant" can be applied to a lady, Justine was a "Giant."
