SHELDON MONUMENT COMPANY 19800 WOODWARD AVE. Justine Polier Noted Jurist Justine Wise Polier, daughter of Stephen S. and Louise Wise, who pursued the leadership roles of her parents and was among the most accomplished women in the judiciary and in political circles, died July 31 at age 84. With an attachment to the art world as a legacy from her mother and as a fighter for civil rights in the quality of her famous father, Judge Polier also had a leadership role in the American Jewish Congress. Her services to assure justice for under- privileged children especially distinguished her in American Jewish life. Judge Polier served 38 years on the New York Fami- ly Court Bench. She was the first woman to hold a judicial office above magistrate in the state. She wrote numerous ar- ticles and books dealing with the legal and psychiatric pro- blems of dealing with children and families. During World War II, while on leave from the bench, Judge Polier served as counsel to Eleanor Roosevelt in the Office of Civil Defense in Washington. She was a vice president of the American Jewish Con- gress and a member of the board, and was a past presi- dent of the Field Foundation. Rabbi Steinberg New York — Harav Moshe Steinberg of New York City, head of the Beth Din of the Rabbinical Council of America and a talmudic scholar, died July 20 at age 86. Charles Lapides Charles S. Lapides, founder and chief executive officer of Quality Laundry and Dry Cleaning, died July 26 at age 89. Born in Rochester, N.Y., Mr. Lapides retired in 1976 and at that time started a home respiratory care service. He was a member of Cong. Shaarey Zedek for more than 50 years and Knollwood Country Club. In the early 1920s, Mr. Lapides was a Firestone tire distributor for the entire state of New York. For a time, Mr. Lapides was chief national negotiator for the industry- wide negotiations with the Teamsters for the Laundry Institute. He leaves his wife, Mollie; a daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Sharon) Herman; a son, Dr. Harvey of Oakland, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Edythe Krepack of New Haven, Conn., and Mrs. Ruth Alder- man of Los Angeles, Calif.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. 'Dial-A-Brit' Now Available New York (JTA) — Having flown to five states to perform six brit milot (ritual circum- cisions) one recent day, Rabbi Pinchas Aloof of Delray Beach, Fla., was more certain than ever that the U.S. Jewish community faced a shortage of mohelim (ritual circumcisers). Seven months ago, he and eight colleagues founded an organization to counter that problem. Brit-America places mohelim where they are especially needed — for exam- ple Arizona, which has but one mohel, according to Aloof. Brit-America also is compil- ing a list of mohelim throughout the world to refer to families in need. About 30 mohelim are affiliated with the organization, but Aloof hopes to expand soon to 200 and eventually more. Brit- America's mohelim have per- formed tens of thousands of brit milot, Aloof said, about a thousand of which were on adults. Aloof performed a brit on a Soviet immigrant and his sons in a joint ceremony. "It was a very moving ex- perience," he said. The rabbi said Brit-America receives calls everyday on its toll-free number 1-800-FOR-BRIT — seeking information on mohelim or the ceremony. The organiza- tion is asking "prospective Jewish parents to continue the practice of the brit milah, and to use competent mohelim in their com- munities," Aloof said. To use a physician negates the religious content, the cove- nant with God begun with Abraham, he noted. mm l LOCAL NEWS h Wine Speaks Rabbi Sherwin Wine will describe the philosophy and the programs of the Birm- ingham Temple and of Humanistic Judaism 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the temple library.
