Chocolate chip cookies in the Holy City: Will America's effect be
democracy or "Dynasty?"

aifa — The "Ameri-
canization" of Israel
— is it good or bad?
The question was the subject
of almost five hours of discus-
sion at a seminar sponsored
by the Association of
Americans and Canadians in
Israel not long ago at the Kib-
butz Lavi Guest Hotel.
Speakers and AACI members
from all over the northern
part of Israel participated in
the attempt to clarify the
issues involved in the ob-
viously provocative title. No
one sought to deny that there
is indeed a "Coca Colaniza-
tion" of Israel, as one wit has
put it, but sharp differences of
opinion were expressed in the
various workshop panels as to
whether the process was
salutary or baneful.
Let's sum up the presenta-
tions telescopically, giving
each side fair attention.
The overall influence of
America on this country
ranges all the way from mere-
ly bad and deplorable, to
malignant, shocking and
horrible, according to some
views expressed. The lower-
ing of cultural standards is
best evidenced by the
popularity of the American
TV programs, Dallas and
Dynasty, which help drag
Israel television down to the
worst of American
entertainment.
The American influence is
selective but pervasive, said
keynote speaker Dr. Zvi Sobol
of Haifa University. Coke and
blue jeans, hamburgers and
sloganed T-shirts are but the
more obvious manifestations
of the American penetration,
and it is no consolation to us

that the same thing is going
on everywhere in the world.
Paris has for years been
unhappy about Le Drugstore,
perhaps recognizing with
justice that it was the enter-
ing wedge of an ongoing
process.
Even the Hebrew language,
preserved in near purity for
several thousand years, is be-
ing bastardized with the
popular infusion of words and
phrases taken over from
American slang and jargon.
The Americanization of
entertainment, culture, dress,
speech and ideals very often
falls short of the original it
imitates. Little wonder that
so many sabras ask
themselves: "Why should we
be satisfied with this ersatz?
Why not get the real thing?"
and off they go to New York
and Los Angeles.
The American influence is
seen and felt in our economy,
in our defense plans and even
in our national policy mak-
ing. George Shultz appears to
have more influence on what
our Knesset or our Cabinet
decide than our own
legislature.
As for many of the other
distasteful matters mention-
ed, they certainly do not
represent the sum total of
American effect on Israel.

It is no accident that the
groundswell movement for
electoral reform in Israel to-
day is being stimulated by
Americans, on the basis of
their own experience with the
way American democracy
operates, and from which
Israel has much to learn. The
emergence of a consumer con-
sciousness movement in re-
cent years is likewise the
result of import from similar
movements in the U.S.
