Michigan Branch Call: 967-4414 Build a better life Israel Ends Ban Of NBC-TV Tel Aviv — NBC and Israel last Monday reached an ac- cord to end the ban on inter- views with Israel's three top leaders which was imposed in response to a critical program on Israel since the Six-Day War, following an agreement by NBC to air Israeli objec- tions to the program. The Israeli government had announced that Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin would refuse interviews to the network's correspondents and would not appear on NBC news pro- grams because NBC had not responded to the govern- ment's letters of protest against the documentary, "Six Days Plus 20 Years: A Dream Is Dying." Shamir's spokesman, Avi Pazner, said that the pro- gram, narrated by Tom Brokaw and broadcast July 1, was a "completely biased and one-sided documentary on Israel!' In turn, NBC complained that the officials' refusals to be interviewed constituted a boycott of the network. The Foreign Press Association in Israel was reported examin- ing the issue, saying that a boycott of a foreign news agency was a dangerous and undemocratic precedent sim- ilar to that practiced by the Soviet bloc nations. NBC vice president Ed Planer went to Israel to discuss the imbroglio with media advisors to the three leaders. At a meeting in Jerusalem, Planer agreed to permit an Israeli official to explain Israel's objections to the program on the "Today" show. Arab Industry Restricted Jerusalem — Industrial development in the Arab sec- tor in Judea, Samaria and Gaza is hampered by restric- tions from both Israel and Jordan, it was stated at a workshop held at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Under pressure from Israeli industrialists and general economic considerations — which view Judea, Samaria and Gaza as a captive market and source of cheap labor — Israel has adopted a conscious policy of not encouraging local industrial development. in the territories, said Dr. Ephraim Ahiram, a resear- cher at the Leonard Davis In- stitute.
