Documenting
The Survivors

Many years have passed
since we were liberated from
the Nazi reign of terror in
Europe. We know that the
passing of time has not wiped
out the memories of these
tragic events .. .
It is most critical that we
survivors of the Holocaust
have it remembered. There
are people in the world, the
new Nazis who are pur-
posefully and desparately at-
tempting to deny the
Holocaust ever occurred; that
we the survivors are telling
deliberate lies. We cannot and
must not allow those prple to
falsify our survivor's history.
Therefore, it is critical that we
record and document each
survivor's testimony.
We survivors have a sugges-
tion to (The Jewish News)
that we come forth to give our
testimonies. Each account is
a confirmation that the
Holocaust was an evil and
tragic event that must be
believed .. .
However, we cannot ac-
complish that task without
the reporters and the news
media. You should carefully
interview, ask questions and
help the public to recall the
past troubles. Do it now, while
we are still alive . . . Record-
ed history that will not only
challenge the lies and denials
of the Holocaust but serve as
a tool to educate future
generations about that event.
Your taped interviews could
• be used in public schools. And
researchers can use them, a
living testimony, so that such
a tragedy can never be visited
upon a people ever again in
this world .. .

why the "silent majority" of
Haredi leadership and rank-
and-file, both in Israel and the
Diaspora, remain silent and
thus allow the non-Haredi
community to believe that the
actions of a minority repre-
sent them as well.

James Besser's article,
"Alaskan Caribous And The
Jewish Problem?!" (July 24),
was very disturbing to me as
a Zionist and as an en-
vironmentalist. Pro-Israel
groups' linking of Israel's
security to oil drilling in the
Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge in Alaska is misguid-
ed for a couple of reasons.

First, the Department of
the Interior, (itself a propo-
nent of the oil exploration),
issued a report in April
estimating that not only is
there a 19 percent chance of
finding oil . . . but that the
quantity of oil would provide
the nation with oil for at most
200 days. Furthermore, the
draft of the same report
predicted the loss of 40 per-
cent of the Porcupine caribou
herd . . . as well as 25-50 per-
cent of the muskox, and 50
percent of the snow geese. En-
vironmentalists consider
these figures to be conser-
vative, and believe there to be
more serious impact.
Can we be so shortsighted
to trade 200 days of energy for
the possibility of greatly
damaging the largest Arctic
wilderness sanctuary in the
world? Can this small
amount of oil really have any
effect on Israel's security?
Second, we Zionists must
stop using Israel's security as
an excuse for supporting ex-
ploitive policies. The same ex-
cuse is used for Israel's sup-
port of various repressive
regimes around the world,
and Israel has lost many sup-
porters as a result. So far,
Israel has not been linked to
anti-conservation forces in
the environmental press.
Let's not lose more friends by
tying Israel's security to a
cause that is unpopular to a
large sector of the American
public. When an issue arises
that is of major importance to
Israel's security, we may not
have any friends left to listen.

Palestinians
Are Riot Victims

Jerusalem (JTA) — Three
Palestinians from the ad-
ministered territories died
July 31 in riots in Mecca,
Islam's holiest city, according
to reports in East Jerusalem.
The three had travelled to
Mecca, Saudi Arabia, for the
Haj, the annual Pilgrimage
made by Moslems around the
world. Two of the victims
reportedly lived in Bethlehem
and Kalkiliya and a third in
Gaza. A fourth victim from
Nazareth also died in the
riots, according to reports.
About 8,000 pilgrims from
Israel and the territories will
return home early next week.
Israeli Arabs received
greetings from relatives in
Saudi Arabia to signal they
were unharmed. The Israeli
Arabs, travelling with the
Jordanian delegation to Mec-
ca, were far from the scene of
the riots, according to reports.
