Some kids, like Sarah,
spend four happy years in
BBYO. They make Jewish
friends and they become
leaders in the Jewish youth
community. But many others
leave.
Adam Larkey, first vice
president of AZA, Michigan
region, has an upbeat ex-
planation of why a majority
drop out: "After a couple
years of developing a friend-
ship, you don't really need
the organization anymore."
Adam complains that the pro-
grams are repetitious and
cause older members to
become apathetic. Wendy
Goldstein blames the low
retention rate on older
members who are unwilling
to take the responsibility of
training new and younger
members. AZA's retention is
higher than BBG's they
believe, because of AZA's
athletic program and because
older BBG girls are not in-
terested in meeting younger
AZA boys.
Most people drop out
because of problems on the
chapter level. Former BBG
member Lori Aaronson ex-
plains, "It was not worth my
time to watch the chapter fall
apart."
It does not have to be that
way. Most Jewish teens
perceiVe AZA and BBG as a
great experience, and the
Michigan region made a con-
certed effort this year to re-
tain high school juniors and
seniors.
According to Arnold J.
Weiner, BBYO region direc-
tor, senior retention improv-
ed 32 percent this year
because of a "senior citizen"
plan which thanked high
school juniors for their leader-
ship efforts within BBYO and
offered them a 20 percent dis-
count to all BBYO conven-
tions in the coming year.
"Sixty to 80 seniors who are
staying in this year," Weiner
says, "are in leadership posi-
tions or are staying in with
friends." An example, he
says, is Disraeli BBG in West
Bloomfield in which 20 senior
girls have decided to come
back. -
Overall retention for the
year was 73 percent for the
boys and 58 percent for the
girls.
Weiner readily admits that
teens develop other interests
which pull them away from
BBYO, but he also knows
that BBYO serves a major
purpose for post-bar mitzvah
or bat mitzvah kids. "A lot of
them are drawn to us for the
social reasons,' -he says, "but
we try to give them program
too."
