We cannot exorcise the Lanskys or the Boeskys by ignoring their existence. On the other hand, I never believed that there was an overriding public right to know all the facts about developments that did not af- fect the general wellbeing and I admit not having rushed to print stories that if published, would have hurt innocent par- ties and performed no service except, perhaps, to titillate a few readers. lb the extent that I had the decision, I tried to follow this rule. My old friend Daniel Schorr, who began a great journalistic career in the dingy Centre Street offices of the JTA facing New York's police headquarters, at- tempted recently in an inter- view to distinguish between a "Jewish journalist" and a "Jew in journalism." The former, he said, in- volved seeing things from the point of view of how is this for the Jews? — a distorted way of looking at the world. But being a Jew in journalism in- volved trying to forget being Jewish and looking at the news the same way any other j orunalist would. I'm not sure the interviewer interpreted him correctly here. Dan would not be satisfied to see things that way; he would want to see them objectively and in perspective, which is some- thing, unfortunately, not too many newsmen do. There is, however, no longer a clear delineation between "Jewish" and general news; the journalist in the general field must deal with Jewish news as an important seg- ment of the daily news budget while his co-worker in the Jewish press must handle the general news which im- pacts on the Jewish com- munity. I don't think there are too many Jewish news- men around who still conceive it to be their role to defend Jewry. I don't believe Dan Schorr ever for a moment in his career forgot that he was Jewish. The background he acquired in dealing in depth with Jewish problems as a newspaperman probably gave him a better insight into many of the situations he was to cover in his later career.
