DON MASSEY CADILLAC

always began with Tommy
singing the theme from
Cabaret as he moved from
table to table warming up the
audience:

WE APPRECIATE
YOUR BUSINESS

Don't sit there alone in your
room,
Come here the music play

453-7500

Once, as Tommy walked
over to a table of Persian
Jews, one of them grabbed
the microphone away from
Tommy and began singing
Cabaret in heavily accented
English:

T

here is no question
that a vacation at
Fidelman's was an ex-
pensive undertaking.Formal
dress was de rigueur at din-
ner and in the evening. But
not only the rich and famous
came to Fidelman's.
"We had an upscale
clientele," Sheila Fidelman
remembers, "but laborers
would save all year to spend
a week at Fidelman's. Here
they were all Fidelman fami-
ly guests. Rich or poor — it
was unnoticeable. Everybody
was treated alike."
Fidelman's attempted to
keep up with changing times,
to relax the dress code, to ex-
pand its clientele. Yet
business dwindled

THETI-ik OMAS CO

Life is a cabaret, old chum,
Come to the Cabaret .. .

Tommy, the professional he
was, suffered the aspiring
singer and, after the song,
smilingly took the
microphone away from the
customer while encouraging
applause.
But Tommy did not realize
whom he was up against.
From that point, every time
Tommy went up to perform
that evening, he was greeted
with a barrage of curses from
the frustrated singer who
shouted, "You stink!" at
Tommy. He could not get
through a song without hear-
ing jeers of "You stink! I can
do that better than you!"
Now, it was Tommy's habit
to stop every show by grabb-
ing his hairpiece and flinging
it onto the stage, Barry
Fidelman says as he
demonstrated the routine.
So as Tommy got fed up
with the heckling and the
taunts of, "I can do anything
you can do!" from the Persian
Jew, he walked over to the
table and faced his rival
eyeball to eyeball: "Can you
do this?" Tommy Lane
sneered as he slammed his
wig on the table to the
astonishment of the whole
audience.
His adversary, however,
was unfazed. The Persian
Jew reached for his own head,
pulled off his hairpiece and
slammed it on the table.
