"Organizations feel the
need to respond publicly to
every situation, and we're
developing media stars, just
like what's happening in
politics. So those profes-
sionals who are more
restrained may be coming
under criticism."
Levine does not necessarily
feel this is a healthy sign, and
that it may signal "a cheapen-
ing of the Jewish communal
agenda!' But it is a reality, he
says. "This is the age of the
Spokesman. Everyone is more
public relations conscious.
Hype is in!'
Levine and others believe
that the most successful
organizations are those where
there is a partnership bet-
ween the lay and professional
leaders. "Lay leaders have to
understand exactly where the
lines are" in terms of their
role, according to Levine. "It
doesn't matter where those
lines are — they can shift,
depending on the personal-
ities of the leaders — but too
often we're seeing that those
lines are not being spelled out
in advance and that can cause
confusion and trouble!'

Orthodox Rabbis
Oppose Bill
New York (JTA) — An
organization of American Or-
thodox rabbis said July 23
they "categorically oppose" a
Knesset bill backed by
Premier Yitzhak Shamir that
would give the Israeli chief
rabbinate or rabbinical courts
exclusive right to approve
converts in Israel, even
though it would exclude con-
version performed by Reform
and Conservative rabbis.
A statement by The Union
of Orthodox Rabbis of the
United States and Canada
said the proposed legislation
"does not solve the problem of
Mihu Yehudi (Who is a Jew)
and "inherently poses a great
danger because we cannot be
certain of future rabbis who
will constitute the rabbinical
courts. Perhaps Conservative
or Reform rabbis will be ap-
pointed by the government,"
the statement said.
