Sen. Rudy Boschwitz of Minnesota told a Detroit-area parlor meeting Monday night that the greatest danger to ships flying the U.S. flag in the gulf comes from sea-borne terrorist's, not from mines or silkworm missiles. Generally, "I think our ships are safe." Should the Iranians attack a U.S. vessel, America must strike back, he said. He explained that the Soviets have lately stepped up their diplomatic activity in the Middle East. The USSR rescheduled the multi-billion dollar debts owed to them by Egypt and Syria, reestablish- ed relations with Oman, made diplomatic approaches to Israel and Jordan, and committed itself to protecting gulf shipping. Despite the higher Soviet profile, "not everyone wants Soviet arms." Israel has "sold" millions of dollars of U.S. arms by proving the in- feriority of Soviet weapons on the battlefield, the Minnesota Republican said. Sen. Boschwitz compared the $80-$90 billion the U.S. spends annually on the defense of Europe and the $40-$50 billion spent in the Far East, with the $4 billion earmarked for Israel.
