Syria Acquires
Soviet MIGs

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Senior
Israeli military sources stated
last Sunday that the MIG29s
Syria received from the
Soviet Union would not con-
stitute a qualitative change
in the military balance of
forces between the Israel
Defense Force and the Syrian
army.
But Syria's possession of
the sophisticated aircraft
would make it necessary for
the IDF to find "operational
solutions" to much more dif-
ficult and complicated
challenges that in the past,
the military sources noted.
They pointed out that it
will be a number of months
before the MIGs are opera-
tional. It is still not clear how
many of the planes will be
provided by the Soviets to
Syria. Only a relatively large
number of planes would con-
stitute a significant change in
the strength of the Syrian air
force.
Meanwhile, Soviet techni-
cians have arrived in Syria to
assist the air force personnel
in learning to use the planes.
The Syrian pilots who will fly
the MIGs are to undergo
training in the USSR.
In a related development,
Moscow announced that
Soviet leader Mikhail Gor-
bachev has decided not to
supply Syria with ground-to-
ground missiles. No reason
was given for halting the
scheduled shipment.

Israel Attacks
Terror Base

Aviv (JTA) — At least
seven Shiite militiamen were
killed by Israeli troops in a
seaborne raid on south
Lebanon in the early hours
July 27. Several militiamen
were also injured in the at-
tack two miles south of Sidon.
There were no Israeli
casualties during the opera-
tion carried out under cover of
helicopter gunships. It was
the first reported seaborne
raid on south Lebanon since
Israel invaded the country in
1982.
The Israel army had
reportedly obtained informa-
tion that hundreds of Palesti-
nian terrorists had set up
bases in the Sidon area, the
south Lebanon security zone,
and were preparing to attack
Israel. According to Lebanese
security forces in Sidon, the
Israelis landed on the coast
from missile boats and blew
up two vehicles belonging to
members of the Popular
Liberation Front.
