On a visit to Detroit this
past week, I happened to read
in The Jewish News Philip
Slomovitz's column on over-
coming undemocratic "ultra-
Orthodox" extremism. I must
say that I was amazed to read
in a Jewish newspaper an ar-
ticle which in its Jewish anti-
Semitism rivals the gentile
anti-Semitism of the Pro-
tocols of the Elders of Zion .. .
In Mr. Slomovitz's article
we read of the "ultra-
Orthodox five percent of the
population" — (as if being a
smaller percentage somehow
diminishes the legitimacy of
their rights to advance their
cause) "that would impose
their type of fundamentalism
upon the entire nation." The
majority of these people, we
are told, "are willing if not to
recognize the secular state of
Israel then at least to take
part in its government to ad-
vance their own religious
agenda and to share in state
funds . . ."
One is at a loss to explain
how someone not recognizing
a state takes part in its
government.
When Peres and Shamir
slug it out, publicly defaming
each other's party's policies
and personalities, that is in
the fine noble tradition of
democratic Israeli politics.
But when Orthodox Jews use
their constitutionally granted
right (not privilege) to ad-
vance their political agenda
in the Knesset, that is "dic-
tating" and "seeking domina-
tion . ."
If a gentile maligns Jews
that's anti-Semitism, but if a
Jewish newspaper editor
vilifies the respected leaders
of Orthodox Jewry, that's a
courageous battle for "Jewish
decency."
When a full five percent of
the population of Israel are
declared guilty by association
of bombing and intimidation,
are accused of "immorally in-
human, anti-Jewish and anti-
democratic principles," then
it is a sad commentary on the
state of the American Jewish
press. But when Diaspora
Jewry is called upon "to ask
its Israeli brethren to outlaw
the hate spreaders in our
ranks" (should they be pack-
ed off to concentration
camps?) one must ask what
should the maligned Jews of
Israel ask their Diaspora
brethren to do with the hate
spreaders in our ranks.

Supporting
Pollard
Jonathan Pollard's punish-
ment was politically
motivated as the length of his
sentence clearly indicates.
There are members in the
State Department who would
like to see American ties to
Israel less firm and the latter
less strong .. .
Jews fell over themselves
trying to be first in line to de-
nounce Pollard. While tripp-
ing over themselves, Israeli
citizens, earning an average
of $600 monthly, collected
$186,000 for Pollard's defense.
American Jewry gave next to
nothing.
It is not too late. Pollard's
appeal is coming up. Suc-
cessful appeals cost money,
lots of money. We now have a
chance to come to the aid of
a man who could not, would
not, see an Israel weakened
by those interested in her
demise.

David Holzel's piece
"Pollard and U.S. Jews"
(March 11) refers to
Americans For A Safe Israel
as maintaining silence on the
subject of Pollard. He writes:
"Hence the yawning silence
of American Jewry, of -the
Zionists, of the Americans For
A Safe Israel . . ." Mr. Holzel's
erroneous assertion must be
corrected.
Americans For A Safe
Israel responded to the
Pollard sentencing vigorous-
ly in a statement to the press
March 13, 1987 which attack-
ed Secretary of Defense
Weinberger for his memoran-
dum to the court concerning
the Pollards in which he
stated that "There is no
chance for peace in the Mid-
dle East if Israel possessed an
intelligence edge."
We conclude our release
with the following: "When
Weinberger's statement is
evaluated and the unjust
sentence given to Pollard con-
sidered, there is no escape but
to conclude that some in the
U.S. administration have in-
tentionally and consistently
refused to acknowledge
Israel's role as a valuable
strategic ally . . ."
