Rd. • Farmington Hills (Bet. 12 & 13 Mile Rds.) • 553 - 3250 88 FRIDAY, JULY 24, 1987 78 Cantors Oppose Women Toronto — A recent poll of 300 members of the Cantors Assembly (the Conservative movement's national organization of cantors) has revealed that 76 out of the 90 men who responded oppose the ordination of women cantors. The poll was conducted by Cantor A. Eliezer Kirshblum on behalf of the Ontario region of the Cantors Assembly, which he chairs, as a reaction to the recent move by Dr. Ishamr Schorsch, chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary, to or- dain women cantors. Schorsch's decision to grant women equal rights on this issue was based on a respon- sum (Jewish legal opinion) prepared by Dr. Joel Roth. Cantor Kirshblum question- ed its validity and thus made an inquiry to the Union for Traditional Conservative Judaism (UTCJ). The UTCJ responded with a ten-page respdnse refuting the halakhic basis for the Seminary's decision. The Cantors Assembly has postponed a decision on whether to accept women pending a subcommittee report to be heard at their May 1988 convention. Homosexual Harassment New York (JTA) — Gay and lesbian Jews in Israel are harassed by police and of- ficials of the Israel Defense Force, according to a report which estimates the number of such Jews in Israel as be- tween 200,000 and 400,000. The report was contained in the current issue of the Digest of the World Congress of Gay and Lesbian Jewish Organizations, which has its headquarters in San Fran- cisco and described the activi- ties of the only organization in Israel for such Jews, Agudah, the Society for the Protection of Personal Rights. The newsletter asserted that the challenges facing such Jews "is perhaps nowhere greater than in Israel." Most Jewish homosexuals in Israel have been reluctant to risk the consequences of being identified as gay or lesbian. Many have a feeling of "little privacy" and perva- sive anti-gay sentiment. Agudah officials have maintained a dialogue with municipal police in an effort to stem "random police harassment" of homosexual Jews.
