years back on Southfield) .. .
He's behind the grill during
those breakfasts at Alia's on
Greenfield north of 11 Mile
. . . Monday through Friday, 7
a.m. to 11 a.m. . . . and Satur-
day and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 2
p.m.
Mistake by Jim and Alia
Sage was not opening for
breakfast after taking over
operation . . . However, it's be-
ing built into a major portion
of the business along with
their lunches and dinners.
First anniversary party by
Alia's will be soon . . . Jim
and Alia formerly owned
Remal's on W. Nine Mile in
Oak Park.
ALia's is a very clean opera-
tion . . . with an amazing 98
percent by Oakland County
health inspectors who only
come there twice a year in-
stead of the usual regularity
to restaurants.
JOHATHON EBER is
new director of sales at Hyatt
Regency Dearborn . . . with
responsibilities for sales and
marketing of the 776-room
hotel in Fairlane Town
Center complex.
STRAWBERRIES aren't
only delicious . . . They're also
nutritious . . . high in
Vitamin C and low in sodium
and calories.
EXECUTIVE chef Bill
Wolf at Rikki's in American
Center Bldg. on Franklin Rd.
returned from the Culinary
Arts Festival in Vancouver,
British Columbia, Canada,
with a veritable chest full of
decorations.
The Michigan Culinary
Mama, of which Bill is a
member, collected 11 gold,
five silver and two bronze
medals . . . plus being second
overall in the regional and ci-
ty team category . . . First
place went to Manitoba,
Canada . . . Among national
teams, Singapore was first,
Canada second, U.S. third and
Switzerland fourth.
Judgings were on cold food
restaurant displays . . . hot
entrees shown cold . . .
pastries . . . and edible
centerpieces.
BACK in 1929, Sam and
Alba Vannelli founded Van-
nelli Restaurant on Wood-
ward near McNichols . . .
Later they were joined by
Sam's two brothers, Al and
Joe . . . Vannelli established a
fine reputation before closing
in 1970.
Dante Vanelli, son of Sam
and Alba, had Gus' Steak
House in Lake Orion . . . and
then changed name to Vanelli
Gus' Steak House . . . He now
also owns the comparatively
new Vannelli Detroit
Restaurant in the 100-year-
old Metropole Bldg. on
Woodward.
"COOL as a cucumber" is
not just a catchy saying .. .
On a hot day, the pulp
temperature of a cucumber
will be 20 degrees F. cooler
than the outside air.
Besides being low in
calories (cucumbers are 95
percent water), inexpensive
and widely available, they are
thought to have healing and
cosmetic properties . . . Rubb-
ed on the skin, cucumbers are
said to bleach freckles and
soothe sunburn.
HOW are you with the
stringed instruments? . . .
viola, cello, violin ..
Birmingham-Bloomfield
Symphony will have audi-
tions Aug. 3, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.,
at Birmingham Seaholm
High, corner Cranbrook and
Lincoln . . . People audition-
ing should have previous or-
chestra experience . . . come
prepared with a 5- to
10-minute composition . . .
and be able to sight read.
SUMMER nights will take
folks back to the '60s and '70s
tonight when "Rare Earth"
makes a rare appearance at
the Troy Hilton, Maple and
Stephenson . . . The six
talented performers in Rare
Earth include four of the
original members . . . They
have been an established
name in the music industry
for over a decade and now are
back performing with the
same unique and
recognizable sound that has
always been their own .. .
Recently, "Rare Earth" decid-
ed to tour again . . . creating
an atmosphere reminiscent of
the Madison Square Garden
Concert in '70 and the
California Jam in '74.
FOLKS conscious of caloric
intake make blueberries a
favorite . . . They are low in
calories, convenient to eat
and contain Vitamins A and
C and iron.
THE PRESENTATION
alone almost makes you get a
carry-out order from Blue Sky
Restaurant on W. Ten Mile
east of Evergreen . . . Sand-
wiches come in beige plastic
bottom with clear plastic
cover . . . Tuna sandwich I
had, for example, also includ-
ed slice of cantaloupe.
ABOUT 3,000 pints of ice
cream were given away free
recently at Southfield Civic
Center by Pierre's French Ice
Cream .. .
They had the largest,
spooniest National Ice Cream
Day celebration of all . . . and
at the same time showed sup-
port of Mothers Against
Drunk Driving (MADD) and
Students Against Driving
Drunk (SADD).
It was a B.Y.O.S. Wring Your
Own Spoon) funfest by
Pierre's.
