Chasidic Boys
To Keep Walking

New York (JTA) — Most of the
boys from the Satmar
Chasidic community of
Kiryas Joel in upstate New
York have walked to school
every day this year in the
rain, snow and cold. They
have refused, for religious
reasons, to board school buses
driven by women.
The boys may have to con-
tinue walking, following a
federal court ruling last
month that the community
could not demand that the
five bus routes for United
Talmud Academy just outside
the village be driven only by
men.
Last month, a U.S. District
Court judge ruled that a plan
by the Monroe-Woodbury
School District to assign on-
ly male drivers to the
disputed bus routes was un-
constitutional. The challenge
to the plan came from female
bus drivers in the school
district.

PEDESTAL
SINKS
Copenhagen (JTA) — The
eighth Gymnastrada, the first
international sports event in
which both Israeli and
Palestinian teams are par-
ticipating, was marred by a
minor but nasty incident at
its opening in Herning, Den-
mark Monday.
A police guard was ordered
for the 41 Israeli gymnasts
and folkdancers after they
were cursed and spat upon by
Palestinian team members
outside the Herning stadium.
The Palestinians were also
forbidden by order of the
Danish foreign ministry and
justice ministry to display the
Palestinian flag.

Dear Doctor: I am suffering from what I understand to be a
"neuromedian disturbance." I say I "understand but I don't!"
First my hands started "going to sleep." Then I lost strength
in one hand. I've been told that I can try surgery to relieve the
pressure.
Dr. Stanley Levine of the Levine Chiropractic Center said the
above inquiry was referring to the median nerve which passes
through the sheath in the wrist or carpal area.
"Pressure on the nerve there can cause what is called the
Carpal-Tbnnel syndrome — tingling, numbness, loss in the
strength in the fingers." And, according to Dr. Levine,
it is one of those sure as the sun will rise problems.
"What I mean, frankly is that this is a problem
that is going to keep returning, and with greater in-
tensity, just as sure as the sun rises, if no effective
treatment is obtained."
According to Dr. Levine, there are many con-
tributing causes to the Carpal-lbnnel syndrome, rang-
ing from low thyroid activity to menopause.
"By far the most common cause is injury or ex-
cessive strain:' says Dr. Levine. "And, just as the leaves
of an injured branch will wither, so too will a hand
DR. STANLEY lose its usefulness if this problem goes unsolved:'
B. LEVINE
There are many short range treatments for the
tingling and numbness, but all are something of a
"bandaid" approach to the problem. Such shorthaul solutions as
hydro-cortisone injections or hormone therapy, seldom prevent that
eventual re-occurrence that will come "as sure as the sun rises."
Simply trying to reduce or prevent the tingling and numbness
is not a solution. Nor is immobilization a desirable goal. The only
proper goal, according to Dr. Levine is restoration of use.
"I'm not going to comment on the advisability of surgery for
the condition, except to say that Chiropractic has proven ever so
effective in unlocking nerve pressure and restoring vital nerve flow.
"I urge anyone who has the condition or notices ocasional tingl-
ing in the fingers or numbness or a hand that frequently goes to
sleep, to look into it and to seek proper and effective care as quick
as they can."
