Allen says. "I don't have the discipline not
to make them. It's as though someone is
saying to me, 'Everyone wants to be in the
film business and wants to make films.
We'll bankroll you, give you eight million,
nine million dollars. Make the films you
want to make.' So I feel like, how can I say
no to that? How often in life does that op-
portunity come to anybody, to be funded
for that kind of money to do things? So I
do it. But it would sort of relieve the anx-
iety and the ambivalence I have about it
if someone would come to me and say,
`That's it. It's over. You cannot make
another film: I'd suddenly heave a huge
sigh of relief."
Woody Allen always seems to be on
another leg of Sullivan's Travels, which is
a Preston Sturges picture about a movie
director, but he never quite makes it to the
conclusion arrived at by Sullivan in the
film, which is that making people laugh,
at themselves and the world and all that
conspires against them, is just as high a
calling as reminding them of the ways in
which life sucks. He can't grasp the
message? Well, may be we can pound it in-
to him. We'll show him pith! We'll show him
jejunity! We'll open a can of ribs! You guys
hold him down; I'll rip a hole in his sweater.
His audience can't vote, no, on what
Woody Allen will do or who Woody Allen
will be. But maybe he could give them a
little credence, a little attention or, say, just
a little sympathy. "I have ideas for some
funny films that I do want to do," Woody
says. Atta boy! Get out there and make
'em! "I guess I'm pretentious and I take
myself seriously," Allen says. No kidding.
This we never heard. The irony may be —
and there ought to be an irony — that
Allen doesn't take Woody seriously
enough.

Jewish Agenda To Nicaragua
Los Angeles (JTA) — New
Jewish Agenda (NJA) de-
cided at its biennial conven-
tion here last week to send a
Benjamin Linder Brigade to
Nicaragua in December to
reopen the confiscated
Managua synagogue as a
Jewish cultural center.
Most of Nicaragua's tiny
Jewish community fled the
country when the Sandinista-
led revolution ousted Gen.
Anastasio Somoza-Debayle,
the military dictator, in 1979.
Some Jewish organizations
contend that the Jews were
forced to leave and their

tras, building the Jewish
sanctuary movement, sup-
porting material aid projects
for Nicaragua, El Salvador
and Guatemala, challenging
disinformation (especially the
myth of anti-Semitism in
Nicaragua) in the Jewish
community and the public at
large, and ensuring that Jews
are proportionately repre-
sented in coalitions and other
anti-intervention efforts."
Several mainstream Jewish
organizations have cited
evidence of anti-Semitism on
the part of the Sandinistas
and claim they collaborate
with the PLO and Libya.
