That is the sad conclusion that Keith Braun has drawn after spending 17 days in the Soviet Union with his wife Svetlana, vacationing and knocking on the doors of the Soviet bureaucracy. "I almost have the feeling now that it is a disadvantage to Svetlana to be married to an American," Braun told The Jewish News this week after returning from Russia. "It would probably be easier for her to get out on her own." Braun said several Soviet Jews in recent weeks have been allowed to leave the Soviet Union after years of refusal because their parents or a relative allegedly knew state secrets. The Soviets reportedly will not allow Svetlana to leave the Soviet Union because her father was an engineer seven years ago and allegedly knows secrets. He added that "it is clear that the Soviets are getting my message, but they are not going to move." The Brauns met with a number of Soviet officials during his visit, and delivered letters to officials from students at Beverly Elementary School in Bever- ly Hills. A letter-writing cam- paign on beh a lf of the Brauns was started by nine-year-old Gabriel Werder at Beverly. Braun tried to arrange a meeting with the Soviet depu- ty foreign minister and other high-ranking officials, but was told that all further ap- peals should be postponed un- til the Supreme Soviet con- siders Svetlana's appeal to emigrate. A decision in the case may not be reached until the end of October. Even then, Braun predicts, it will take a major East-West breakthrough to pressure the Soviets to release Svetlana. Braun does not expect to make another trip to Moscow before the end of 1987, and will stay in contact with his 22-year-old wife through let- ters and telephone calls.
