Problems

I would like to add my
amens to the letters express-
ing indignation at the harsh
sentences imposed on
Jonathan Pollard and his
wife. The reactions of Jews in
the U.S. in regard to this mat-
ter have exposed some very
serious psychological pro-
blems in the body of our peo-
ple vis-a-vis their Jewishness.
The most crucial lesson of the
Holocaust was the impor-
tance of speaking out forcibly
as soon as one perceives an in-
justice occurring. How many
times do we have to learn that
the failure to express indigna-
tion in such situations for fear
of encouraging anti-Semitism
leads to further injustice?
The Jewish people seem to
have learned this lesson well
in regard to fighting for the
rights of others and have been
quick to take up their causes,
but we seem still to have
great difficulty demanding
equal rights for Jews. A life
sentence for Jonathan Pollard
was a grave injustice. And if
Caspar Weinberger perceives
Pollard's deeds as worse than
others who have spied for
Russia, then you know that
he perceives Israel as more of
a threat to the U.S. interests
than Russia. But most think-
ing Americans know that is
not the case.
It seems to me that rabbis
and Jewish organizations
have an obligation to set up
workshops on the subject. A
Jewish psyche, which not on-
ly accepts such an obvious
slur on the Jewish body
without significant protest
but even concurs with such an
unusually harsh sentence,
needs exploration.

Washington D.C. — A
group of 25 Reform Jewish
high school students, mem-
bers of the Mid-Atlantic Fed-
eration of Temple Youth,
hosted a four-day sleep-away
camp last week at an undis-
closed location in Virginia for
50 refugee children, aged 7 to
11, from El Salvador.
The children, who with
their parents have sought
shelter illegally in the United
States, are among the 85,000
Central American refugees
currently living in the Wash-
ington, D.C. area.
