Consequently, it became
their belief that God must re-
ly on deception in winning
souls for his "Perfect Fami-
ly," which is seen
synonymously with the
Unification Church and the
Reverend Moon. They com-
mitted themselves complete-
ly to the goals of total conver-
sion of potential recruits and
fund 'raising, relinquishing
past educational and career
goals. The hidden agenda was
to diminish recruits' capacity
to make personal judgments
before identifying themselves
as followers of the Reverend
Moon. Galper's patient
groups estimated that ap-
proximately 90 to 95 percent
of those who remain for the
weekend become full time
Unification members.

Galper concluded that the
indoctrination methods of the
church are coercive and cause
radical changes in behavior
and perception during a
relatively brief time. His
study indicates that the
psychological climate of the
rural training center is con-
ducive to producing a hyp-
notic trance.
The National Council of
Churches of Christ in the
U.S.A., Americans United for
Separation of Church and
State, and the American Bap-
tist Churches in the U.S.A. fil-
ed a friend-of-the-court brief
against Molko and Leal.
Their brief contends that
Molko's and Leal's claims pre-
sent grave threats to the
religious practice of Unifica-
tion Church members and of
adherents to other religions;
that speech and communica-
tion are essential to religious
observance, especially in
witnessing and evangelizing,
that their claims unconstitu-
tionally assert liability for
religious speech.
Leal and Molko contend
that theirs is not a suit
against a religion for holding
or promulgating false beliefs
but a suit against a religious
organization for denying
religious affiliation and coer-
cively imposing their beliefs
through psychological
manipulation. They believe
religious conversion can occur
in many ways, but should not
commence with the telling of
a lie as to the religion's iden-
tity. They argue that re-
quirements of intent to solicit
for conversion and on behalf
of what leader and organiza-
tion the solicitation is taking
place does not offend religious
liberty.
Significant questions are
raised by this suit. When
religious beliefs support
deception as a means of doing

God's work, then does not the
state have a compelling in-
terest to protect society from
behavior that comes from the
deception? Does not religious
authority become superior to
government authority when
it is permitted to commit
fraud, infringing on the most
basic constitutional freedom
— the freedom to avoid any
religion if that's what an in-
dividual wishes? Should it be
lawful to deceive prospects
who would avoid a specific
religious group if given ac-
curate information?
A government that protects
fraud and coercion by a
religious group promotes,
favors and aids that religion
to flourish. Hopefully, the
case of Molko and Leal will
set a precedent against
deceitful and coercive
behavior by religious groups
that cause personal injury to
innocent victims in our
society.

minister threatened, "Don't
think that in the shadow of
peace we aren't preparing and
organizing ourselves at every
moment to restore our rights,
if there is a delay in their
restoration via the peace pro-
cess . ."
In spite of the peace treaty,
the danger of Egypt going to
war with Israel is very great.
In April 1984, when the
Defense Minister Abu
Ghazala visited Damascus,
he promised that Egypt
would aid Syria in another
Middle East war. The Israel-
Egypt "peace" treaty allows
Egypt to go to war against
Israel in accordance with
Egypt's prior treaty obliga-
tions to Arab countries. In-
deed, one month after the
treaty was signed, Egypt's
Prime Minister Mustafa
Khalil stated his country's
position when he declared to
a joint session of his parlia-
ment's foreign relations and
Arab affairs committee that,
"because of Cairo's collective
defense treaty, Egypt would
assist Syria if it decided to
retake the Golan Heights by
force."
Most certainly Washington
is fully aware of the Arab
threat to peace. The question
is why is the Administration
providing Egypt with our
most lethal and sophisticated
weapons that surely will en-
courage war against Israel.
