U.S. Jews Must Demonstrate During Pope's September Visit MICHAEL LERNER I t would be a tragic error for American Jewry if we fail to greet Pope John Paul's September visit to the U.S. with massive demonstrations in the streets. These demonstrations should be dignified and peaceful and they should be explicitly aimed not against American Catholics or Catholicism, but against the Pope and the Vatican. Nevertheless, they should provide a place for public expression of the deep anger toward this Pope felt not only by Jews but by many non-Jews as well. While leaders of American Jewish organizations set up meetings with the Pope so that Jewish "views" can be respectfully conveyed directly to him, and while others sign petitions, most American Jews must transcend this orgy of civility and bear witness in a more fitting way to the six million of our brethren murdered: by publicly expressing our anger at the outrageous act through which the Pope publically legitimized Waldheim's presidency. In that act Pope John Paul symbolized the contempt the Catholic church has maintained toward Jews through the centuries. The aim of these demonstrations is not to "exchange views" or to "respectfully petition," but to demand that the Pope and the Vatican treat the Jewish people with respect. That demand for respect has three immediate, specific components: 1. The Pope and the Vatican must Michael Lerner is editor of Tikkun, a bimonthly Jewish magazine. recognize the State of Israel and accord to it the same rights that it accords to other states around the world. 2. The Vatican must give a full accounting and disclosure of the role of the church during the Holocaust. This accounting needs to take place not just at the Vatican but also on the parish level. 3. The Pope must order a systematic effort in every parish to reeducate Catholics about the Jews and the role of the church throughout the past two thousand years in generating and sustaining anti- Semitism. This should include an unambiguous statement of apology and penance to the Jewish people. But such a statement must be accompanied by a comprehensive program on the parish level to change the consciousness of all those affiliated with the church. During the week of September 11-18, Jews and Christians alike should join in public expressions of outrage and press these demands. Demonstrations in the streets, silent vigils, prayer meetings, picketing, ads in newspapers — all forms of public expression must be used. Those Christians who didn't know what was happening in Europe forty years ago should be invited to speak up now — when the most visible Christian leader in the world has greeted the world's highest ranking ex-Nazi and called him "a man of peace." The Waldheim affair, not the Pollard affair, provides the ultimate test of the viability of Jewish life in Galut.
