tomatoes, side of rice pilaf
and mixed Greek vegetables
. . . brought to me by very ef-
ficient waiter Steve Karabe-
tian, also well-known in the
northwest area . . . Pleasant
waitress Rose Columbo is
there too . . . plus Chef
Thallis Mihail, known to so
many as just plain "Tommy."
It'll be three years in
December that Louie
Bricolas, formerly of Dimitri's
Wildflower, and sister Alex
have had Greek Islands.
But as successful as Louie
has become with Greek
Islands, catering is still the
love he cherishes most .. .
and a lot of people will be very
glad to hear this.
AS THE summer heats up
and restaurant diners seek
lighter and more interesting
food items, memories of last
winter's vacation in the
Caribbean have prompted the
Rhinoceros on Riopelle to pre-
sent a special month-long
menu of tropical dishes,
drinks and desserts.
Chef Mark Schwartz,
formerly of southern Florida,
has compiled an interesting
and tasty-sounding menu
that features Key West and
Caribbean cuisine through
August . . . Also,any diner
ordering a special Caribbean
drink with their tropical en-
tree will receive a complimen-
tary tropical dessert.
"PUTTIN' ON the Stars"
noted celebrity impersona-
tion show is July 20, 30, Aug.

Center on Van Dyke in Sterl-
ing Heights.
M-M-M-M! Michigan pro-
ducts to celebrate the state's
150th birthday are being
served in specially-created
dishes by C.A. Muer
restaurants throughout
metropolitan Detroit through
August 16.
In cooperation with the
Michigan Department of
Agriculture, Chuck Muer's
restaurants and Executive
Chef Craig Common have
developed a menu that
features appetizers, entrees
and desserts from fresh
Michigan produce selected at
its peak season as well as
other Michigan products.
Customers ordering from
the M-M-M-M! Michigan
menu on Tuesdays will
receive a complimentary Ver-
nor's float made with Vernor's
ginger ale and Stroh's vanilla
ice cream . . . Other desserts
include fresh blueberries with
heavy cream, tart cherry pie
and Michigan cherry ice.
The M-M-M-M! menu is fea-
tured at . . . Bloomfield
Southfield
Charley's,
Northville
Charley's,
Charley's, Fairlane Charley's
in Dearborn, Eastside
Charley's in Harper Woods,
Uptown Charley's in Madison
Heights, Charley's in Livonia,
Charley's in Wayne, Diggers
in Farmington and
Meriwethers on Telegraph
and Ten Mile.
DON'T KNOW what it
means, but big brass sign in
men's room at T.G.I. Friday's
on Evergreen says, "Beware
of The Trains."
A FEW rough spots here
and there, but slowly and
surely getting smoothed out
at Key Largo on Pontiac Trail.
Never heard of it before .. .
and so had to have salmon
trout being served . . . The
fish is a cross breed and very
good.
Didn't have any, but our
guest enjoyed the Key lime
pie made at Key Largo . . .
yellow with slices of lime.
Our waitress, Cindy
Kansman, is good . . . per-
sonable and efficient.
Key Largo seats about 260
people in the dining room and
lounge area by windows
overlooking Walled Lake .. .
An outside wooden deck is
also used as a "holding" area
for folks waiting to be seated
. . . Whatever the draw is,
must be magnetic to keep
people there about two hours
wait on Fridays and Satur-
days . . . especially with so
many good restaurants
around the lake area . . . A lot
of people are getting smart
and going to Key Largo dur-
ing the week.
Kevin Williams is executive
chef at Key Largo . . . and
very efficient sous chef is Bob
Stano.
IF YOU like eggs and
onions, best place to get them
is at a delicatessen-
restaurant . . . Some others
also know how, but make the
eggs without sauteeing the
onions . . . Eggs and onions
should not be made together
for this dish.
THE SIX Buddy's Pizza
restaurants head list of par-
ticipating restaurants this
year for World Food Day,
which will again be conduc-
ting its restaurant campaign,
"The 7% Solution" . . . Last
year, 49 area restaurants par-
ticipated by agreeing to
donate a portion of their day's
receipts on Oct. 16 — World
Food Day — to emergency
food providers in the area .. .
Donations were distributed
by the Southeastern
Michigan Food Coalition.
Many folks in our com-
munity know that the pro-
blems of hunger and poverty
are particularly acute in
parts of Detroit . . . Fewer
know that many residents of
Oakland and Macomb coun-
ties also face hunger on a dai-
ly basis.
World Food Day is part of an
effort to increase awareness of
the extent of hunger
throughout metropolitan
Detroit . . . and make a con-
tribution toward resolving
that problem.
Other World Food Day ac-
tivities are also being plann-
ed . . . The Jewish Communi-
ty Council, a member of the
World Food Day Committee,
will be distributing curricular
materials on World Food Day
to school districts in the tri-
county area . . . In addition,
Bread for the World, a Chris-
tian citizen's movement for
teaching about hunger, will
facilitate local broadcasting of
a nationwide teleconference
on hunger issues on World
Food Day.
Volunteer and restaurant
participation in the "7% Solu-
tion" campaign is being coor-
dinated by St. Vincent de
Paul Community Food Depots
. . . To help, call 548-8450.
Bob Jacobs, owner with dad
Billy of the Buddy's opera-
tions, says that hopes are for
the number of participating
restaurants, as well as the
amount of money raised for
hunger relief on World Food
Day, to double or triple last
year's figure.
Make sure you eat at one of
the participating restaurants
on Oct. 16 . . . Remember,
seven percent goes to fight
hunger and poverty.
