The very likeable twosome have been tossing their July 4 shindig about 15 years now . . . and it keeps getting bet- ter . . . About 80 strewn about the backyard lawns of Marge and Jerry and neighbors Tillie and Bill Ross for this year's gala. Theme was July 4 and Michigan's 150th birthday . . . from the smart invites by Deborah's Invitations to paper goods, balloons, sparkl- ing centerpieces, overhead lights and flags . . . all red, white and blue . . . Even the three hired waitpersons, bartender, and one-man dance band Bob Evans wore the traditional colors. Lots of other celebrations besides . . . Anniversaries of Marge and Jerry, Sylvia and Carl Shey and Coleen and Bob Evans . . . Birthdays of Clara Schwartz, Coleen Evans, Ilene "Torchy" Silver- man and Irma Wald. So much good food . . . Hors d'oeuvres of guacamole with nacho dip, vegetable tray with dill and ranch dressings made by Sandy Robbins who also made spinach dip in pumper- nickel bread . . . stuffed mushrooms, hot crabmeat with crackers, hot salami brought by Liz Freeman .. . all dips served by Marge in a red cabbage and pineapple boat . . . For dinner, Marge and Jerry pressed over 100 homemade hamburgers, Selma Raskin and Bea Mandell helped Marge cut over 100 marinated chicken and vegetable kabobs . . . Hot- dogs galore, Jerry's "famous" chili (Lou Popper made it last year, but is recovering from a back problem and enjoyed so- meone else's for a change), bean salad, cole slaw, pasta, etc. Even a sumptuous sweet table outside . . . watermelon- boat trimmed in kiwi and fill- ed with fresh cut-up fruit, red, white and blue tarts made in- to a flag, pistachio mousse, Ir- ma Wald's popular cheesecake, Marilyn Wayne's delicious strudel and mandelbread . . . and of course plenty of halvah. Tables trimmed to the usual colors and all guests with fireworks, sparklers and loud pops. Final touch was an answered prayer . . . perfect weather . . . Decorations stayed up for still another party next day . . . with 18 people welcoming home Lil and Max Mills, here for a three-week stay from Lauderhill, Fla., where they are now residing. ALVIN "LEFTY" SOLOMON turned 70 last January but takes a back seat to none of the younger guys . . . He pitches in the 35 and older softball league of West Bloomfield . . . In a recent game, Alvin pitched . . . while son, Dr. Marshall Solomon, who turns 40 this year, caught dad's pitches . . . They are teammates on the Art Moran Pontiac softball team. "I DO DEPT" . . . Karen Kaczor and Shelby Fox slated for a middle-aisle session Sept. 13 . . . Nancy Robbins and Marshall Mandell have plans for a November wed- ding . . . Both now live in California. MAN OF THE YEAR honoree by City of Hope Greater Detroit Chapter will be Richard Gallagher, head of Bi-Cons Construction . . . He'll receive Spirit of Life award at the group's annual fundraiser, Sept. 12, Hyatt Regency, Dearborn. Gallagher visited the medical center in Duarte, Calif. and was highly im- pressed . . . Dr. Stella Evantelista will be chairper- son for the event. GET WELL WISHES . . . to Renee Simon . . . recuperating at home after foot operation.
