Dana Dobransky with her mother, Judy: "I've watched her grow with a
marvelous maturity."
On _ the
plus side she lists,
_ plus
"traveling, meeting
meeting hundreds
of people from different coun-
tries, from different states,
and seeing sights there and
getting the opportunity to be
in situations — like going to
see the Jefferson Memorial or
going to see the Dead Sea or
the Black Sea — people don't
always get to do that."
Although the Dobranskys
have lived in Sterling Heights
since 1971 — Dana's father,
Richard, works in nearby
Center Line — they are
members of Oak Park's Tem-
ple Emanuel. Dana attended
religious classes there
through the seventh grade,
and her brother Danny will
be bar mitzvahed this year.
But the schedules of the busy
family members prevent
them from attending regular
services. Judy Dobransky ex-
plains, "the transportation
and the time factor have been
a real detriment to really be-
ing involved with the temple
because we're so active with
so many other things and the
times conflict!'
Dana describes her basic
routine as, "go to school, go to
gym, go home, eat and then
homework." She maintains a
_3.6 grade point average, on a
four-point scale, at Sterling
Heights High School.
No stage mother, Judy says
Dana makes her own deci-
sions to remain dedicated to
gymnastics. "It's something
that I don't think a parent
can do for a child. Because it's
the child who has to put
themselves through all this
every day!'
Judy feels that her
daughter's determination has
been a key to her success.
"I've been absolutely
delighted with how she has
done, in the last two years
particularly. I have watched
her grow, and I've watched
her grow with a marvelous
maturity in performance, the
kind of self-confidence that
makes her a fine competitor.
There are many highly-
skilled kids. But it's got to be
more than just the skill that
gets you to the top."
As she moves up in the
gymnastics world, as greater
prizes are at stake in each
meet, Dana says the sport is
more fun for her than when
she began. Shp adds, "Many
people don't like to "compete,
but for some reason, I love to
compete. I like to just have all
the eyes on me when I walk
on the floor. I like to express
myself, and I express myself
through my movements,
sometimes. But I try to use
gymnastics to express my
feelings."
In competition, she tries to
take one event at a time. "You
always have to analyze
everything. But you can't
analyze too much, because
you can over-analyze. Then
you start thinking of
everything — you're thinking
of how you should do it, you
think. 'Oh my God, what if I
don't do that,' or you
get scared . . . you have to
know yourself, because you
can really hurt yourself men-
tally!'
Dana's routines are all
meticulously prepared, yet
they must flow naturally in
competition. "That's what
workouts are for," she says.
