For example, Hebrew
Memorial has vacant plots
that were bought by far-
sighted consumers as far back
as the 1920s, in keeping with
the Jewish tradition of taking
care of this need for oneself.
B'nai Israel, however, is
totally committed to
perpetual care on a pre-need
basis. The 50-acre memorial
park is only two years old,
with only 20-some burials to
date. Nevertheless, more
than 500 families own sites at
the Novi cemetery, located
across from Twelve Oaks
Mall.
And more are sure to follow
suit. With weekly newspaper
advertisements, direct mail
and a staff of three salespeo-
ple, B'nai Israel is spreading
the word and offering a
number of options and conve-
niences, like 90-days-same-as-
cash, a family protection plan
and a national lot exchange
for families who move to
another state.
B'nai Israel is a for-profit
enterprise owned by
Michigan Cemetery Manage-
ment. In the business for
more than a century, the com-
pany operates nine
cemeteries including the
venerable Woodlawn in
Detroit.
Resnick says, "All the other
Jewish cemeteries in the
metro area have been here for
years and years. They have a
heritage." That heritage -
having a parent or family
member previously buried on
location - is a powerful com-
ponent in choosing a
cemetery.
"But we have two things
going for us," counters
Resnick. "People love the
location. And people love the
price."
The price is $295 per space.
That's the current price. It
started at the blue-light level
of $195 and was increased at
$50 increments. The price
will make a few more jumps
over the next 18 months un-
til it reaches $495. The
message from Memorial
Gardens is clearly "buy
now."
There are parts of the
cemetery business that will
never change, that don't heed
advertised, oxymoronic no-
tions of now/perpetual. With
the detachment of a
philosopher, historian Ap-
plebaum muses on the seem-
ing incongruity of the
Workmen's Circle grounds
cooperatively maintained by
socialists, folk societies and
different types of synagogues.
"In the grave," says Ap-
plebaum, "it doesn't matter if
a person is a leftist or a Con-
servative." ❑
