'Jewish Journal' New York (JTA) — A private group of Los Angeles Jewish community and business leaders will replace the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles as primary lender to Los Angeles Jewish Publica- tions Inc., the publisher of The Jewish Journal, an indepen- dent Jewish newspaper week- ly there. The purchase averts the sale of the paper, a heavily con- sidered option due to its finan- cial difficulties. The investment deal was announced last week by Wayne Feinstein, Federa- tion executive vice president. According to the agreement, the Jewish Journal will remain independent from the Federa- tion, although the investors are Federation leaders, including president Stanley Hirsh, vice president Herbert Gelfand and board members Edwin Brenn- glass, Carl Rheuban and Osias Goren. Brennglass will serve as in- terim publisher until a perma- nent publisher, a position never before filled at The Journal, is hired. Editor Gene Lichtens- tein was unavailable to com- ment about his situation. The investors agreed to pay the Federation 10 percent of its $663,000 start-up loan granted more than one year ago when the Federation's Los Angeles Jewish Community Bulletin was transformed into the Jewish Journal. To cover operating costs, the investors decided to loan the Journal up to $2 million, with interest, over two years. 'Disease' Afflicts Pope New York (JTA) — A reputedly highly infectious disease, most recently afflic- ting Pope John Paul II, trig- gered the North American Jewish Students' Network to quarantine the Vatican Mis- sion to the United Nations June 24. Initial symptoms of this contagious malady, known as "Waldheimer's Disease," in- clude not recognizing Nazis and falling into selective amnesia about Nazi war crimes. Protestors noted that Pope John Paul II's case reached an advanced stage as he agreed to meet with Austrian Presi- dent Kurt Waldheim. "The il- lness is very dangerous," ex- plained Alan Orich, executive director of Network. "Last year, over 50 percent of Austria caught it." 30%, 40% 50% OFF and • Bathing Suits and Beach Accessories S1M RL, AND OTHER FAMOUS BRAND Bask in the season's Newest in swimwear. • GOTTEX 'COLE • ROXANNE "OTHER FAMOUS BRANDS MODEL COATS P•S•M•L•XL•XXL 25% OFF The Coverup With Alternatives. . .
