Israeli Master Mime
Charms Audiences
Jerusalem — Israelis are not
particularly known for their
silence, but Hanoch Rosenn is
an exception. He has made a
serious reputation for himself
as Israel's — indeed, one of the
world's — premier mimes.
Rosenn's current show, "Don't
Hold Me to My Word," has been
playing to packed houses
throughout Israel since last
summer, running almost every
night of the week. His first
show ran 500 nights in Israel
and throughout Europe and
was equally applauded by au-
diences of every age and from
every social strata.
Rosenn's appeal lies not simp-
ly in a total mastery of his body
and art, but in his gentle, wry
humor, which mirrors the
foibles of 20th Century life. In
a series of sketches, his supple
body presents people and ob-
jects that are familiar to all of
us. He is in turn a mischievous
fetus afloat in the womb; a
typewriter with a soul; a pran-
cing malevolent flu virub: and
a man on a diet irresistably
drawn to the refrigerator. With
a twist of his body he parodies
a detective story, transforming
himself into every character in
turn. His realistic imitations of
a man going up and down a
non-existent escalator, and of
the levitation effect of a dying
man ascending to heaven, draw
gasps from his audiences.
Where Rosenn's work differs
from most mimes is that
although he himself doesn't
speak, his sketches make use of
sound and cinematic and
lighting effects. Indeed, Rosenn
prefers to call himself simply
an entertainer. "I don't call my
work mime," he says. "I like to
think of it as entertainment
without words; a one man show.
He began to perform in plays
and sketches at the age of 15 in
school dramatic groups and
went on to become a member of
the army entertainment
troupes during his army ser-
vice. His formal studies have in-
cluded stints with some of the
world's foremost classic mimes,
including Ela Marceau (former
wife of Marcel) and Etienne
Decroux, the teacher of
Marceau himself.
Now, Rosenn has set off on a
path of individual development:
"I am trying to develop my own
style. I think of it as something
like working in color, rather
than in traditional black and
white."
Rosenn is particularly belov-
ed in Israel by children, who
know him as "Panto," the star
of many children's television
programs. For his work on
educational television, he was
awarded Israel's coveted Kinor
David award.
Three years ago, at the age of
26, Rosenn set off to work his
way around the world. He
visited Italy, Germany and
Japan, and then decided to try
his luck in the United States.
There, he mimed in the streets,
on cruise ships, as a mannequin
in shop windows, and even
mimed advertisements for
yogurt.
Rosenn's big break came
when he was chosen top mime
in New York in a contest
against several dozen others.
Following the mime award,
Rosenn was invited by Nancy
Reagan to perform at a benefit
dinner at the White House. In
December 1986, Rosenn was
featured in an article in New
York magazine, where he was
labeled "best mime of New
York." He plans to take his cur-
rent show to an off-Broadway
theater in New York in May.

Creationism
Decision Hailed
New Ycirk (JTA) — Jewish
organizations hailed the
Supreme Court decision last
week that prohibited the
teaching of creationism in
public schools, ending a ten-
year dispute.
The 7-2 decision overturned
a Louisiana state statute
which gave equal classroom
time and equal space in tex-
tbooks to the teaching of
evolution and creationist
theories. The court ruled that
creationist teaching in public
schools was unconstitutional
because it was construed as
teaching for religious
purposes.
Arkansas had a similar
statute which was struck
down, and at least 12 other
states have at one time
defeated bills to allow crea-
tionist teaching in public
schools.
"The ruling sends a clear
signal to public school of-
ficials that they have an
obligation to maintain the
secular nature of the school
system — they can't make
their own religious agenda,"
said Marc Stern, American
Jewish Congress director of
legal affairs.
AJCongress, the American
Jewish Committee and Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith all filed amicus curiae
(friend-of-the-court) briefs
urging the Supreme Court to
ban teaching of creationism
in public schools.
