were similarly timid. The fear
of "offending the non-Jews"
has led to a strategy in which
we are assured that the best
advances will be made by our
leaders whispering into the
ears of the powerful non-Jews.
It was this strategy that
proved morally and political-
ly bankrupt in Europe — and
it was in reaction to a history
of Jewish passivity in the face
of those who oppressed them
that the Zionists argued that
Jewish dignity would only be
possible in the Land of Israel.

because we believe that this
is possible that we assert our
right as committed Jews to
criticize various aspects of
Israeli policy toward the
Palestinians. Similarly, we
will not be cowed by fear of
the non-Jews into muting our
protests when our Jewish
dignity has been offended. If
we are wrong, if it really is
not possible to express our
righteous anger in Galut,
then those Zionists who say .
that Diaspora Jewish life is
necessarily unhealthy and
pathological will have been
proven correct. How Jews res-
pond to the visit of the Pope
becomes a litmus test for the
future health of Jewish life in
America. ❑

At, AILAeI'

Poland and prays for the souls
of the millions of Jews who
were murdered at the hands
of the Nazis. But those are not
Jews but Poles, Hungarians
and Czechs. Later, he holds
an audience with a former SS
officer who now serves as
president of Austria.
The Roman Catholic
Church has a long history of
protecting its own. Austria is
a Catholic nation. Why
shouldn't the Holy Father
show respect to its head of
state? Germany has a
sizeable Roman Catholic
population. Why shouldn't
the Church enter into an
agreement with that nation
even if its head of state was
Adolph Hitler. And so the list
of accommodations to anti-
Semites continues.
When the war was over,
Jewish Holocaust survivors
found themselves in a strange
position. They owed their
liberation to the Russian ar-
my. The Soviets gave the
Jewish survivors a measure of
assistance long enough to suit
their propaganda mills: to
prove they were the ones that
really cared while the Allies
returned to their bad old ways
. . . (Those) who collaborated
with the Nazis found
themselves caught between
Nuremburg trials in the West
and Soviet justice in the East.
The Roman Catholic
Church came to the rescue.
Poles, Ukrainians, Lithua-
nians, Hungarians, Croatians
— all Roman Catholics or af-
filiated with the Church — re-
quested and received
assistance in their efforts to
find refuge in North America.
It's no surprise that the
Pope gives Kurt Waldheim an
official audience. The same
Church that forgave and
forgot Nazi collaborators in

1945 continues to follow the
same path.

Zev Davis

Upper Nazareth, Israel

Is it not a bit perplexing
that over forty years since
World War II the Pope should
invite an audience between
himself and Austrian Presi-
dent Kurt Waldheim? Surely
world opinion is not on the
side of the Pope. The juries of
the world hearing the cases
against the convicted are one
by one finding the
perpetrators guilty of their
brutal acts .. .
A publication of the Jewish
Community of Greater New
York, in its coverage of the
meeting, brings forth the
point that the Catholic
Church is having a difficult
time integrating the survival
of the Jewish people and our
return to our land and the
establishment of the state in-
to its theology.
Our many trials throughout
history should have erased
our name long ago. The fact
that we refuse to abandon our
Torah beliefs has often been
the sole reason for our
slaughter and, yet, we are
here to practice our religion.
Perhaps the Pope will some
day soon get the message that
a meeting with Kurt
Waldheim or any other plann-
ed meetings or actions will
not prevent us from advanc-
ing with our lofty ideals and
goals.
