Editors and Readers
Hold Similar Beliefs
Philadelphia (JTA) — As a
group, the editors of U.S. Jewish
newspapers hold attitudes very
similar to those of their readers,
agreeing, for example, that
Jewish education and the
separation of church and state
are the most important contem-
porary concerns.
This consensus is no surprise,
as both groups bear the in-
fluence of the Yiddish
newspapers of the turn of the
century. The Daily Forward ex-
pecially took on the self-

message of two sociologists, Dr.

Tobin based his comparisons
on a recent attitudinal survey

demographic studies he has.
conducted in U.S. Jewish
communities.
He said that about half of
both groups felt the single most
important issue facing U.S.
Jews was Jewish education.
Slightly more than 20 percent
of both groups cited the separa-
tion of church and state, and
about 13 percent said insuring
