ed the authorities for permis-
sion to publish uncensored
Jewish magazine with Sergei
Grigoryants and Iosef Begin
among the editors.
Before leaving their apart-
ment, I unloaded my purple
bag.
Besides visiting refuseniks
to offer moral support, I was
trying to give as much as
possible to these refuseniks
who have so little.
For many refuseniks, there
is economic sacrifice when
making a public decision to
leave the Soviet Union. Both
Viii and Evgenia are scien-
tists. Many of the refuseniks
are doctors, physicists, and
engineers. After announcing
one's intention to leave the
Soviet Union, one frequently
loses his job.
No one on my tour group
noticed I had entered the
country with two enormous
suitcases. And by the end of
the trip, I had almost nothing
left. I was giving it all away
by the bagfull.
Trip over, our tour group
flew from Leningrad to
Dublin by the Soviet airliner,
Aeroflot. Inside the Irish air-
port I told my travel compa-
nions about my visits with
refuseniks. They were amaz-
ed I had visited those families
without being detected.
I reminded my friends of
the words of a Leningrad
lawyer who insisted legal
help is available for political
activists in his country.
Lies. I knew from my con-
versations with refuseniks, no
attorney in the Soviet Union
will handle such a case for
fear of losing his practice
entirely.
It's up to us Jews outside
the Soviet Union to do what
we can.
