CAFE KATON: 23055 Coolidge near Nine Mile Road (in the Oak
Park Shopping Plaza), Oak Park, Phone — 547-3581. Hours: 11 a.m.-
9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 12-9 p.m. Sunday.
A dairy restaurant owned by Leo Mertz and supervised by the Coun-
cil of Orthodox Rabbis. Cafe Katon evolved as the demand grew for
something more creative than the carry-out pizzas Mertz added about
ten years ago to the pastries offered at Mertz Bakery. The pizza is still
on the menu, and can also be purchased for $1 a slice. There is seating
for 28 at tables, with additional counter seating for six and plenty of

BEST OF EVERYTHING

CELEBRATING OUR
10th ANNIVERSARY

t had rained most of the
day and threat was still in
the air for thunderstorms
. . . but at 6:25 p.m. on a Tues-
day evening, the 130-seater
restaurant was packed . . .
with customers still waiting
in line.
What is Stephan Becharas'
secret at his Gallery II
restaurant in Bloomfield
Plaza on Telegraph and
Maple, no doubt you ask?
It's a combination of things
that brings people from all
over . . . not any one or two or
even three or more.
When he moved, four years
ago, from his Gallery opera-
tion on Ten Mile near
Evergreen, people asked why
he was going out "so far" .. .
However, no matter where
Stephan would have moved, it
seems, this veritable Pied
Piper of the restaurant
business has folks following
him wherever he goes . . . and
bringing others with them.
Stephan is noted for his un-
canny cleanliness . . . His
restaurant is always near the
100 percent mark by health
inspectors . . . an amazing
feat . . . with spotless mirrors,
nary a crumb on the floor, kit-
chen that looks like it is never
used, walk-in freezer so neat,
etc.
Gallery II is an interesting
place in which to dine . . . It
is a true art gallery . . . with
booths and tables surrounded
by decorated walls of pain-
tings, lithos, mirrors, ar-
tifacts, sculpted pieces,
painted dishes, brass urns,
greenery, Chinese painted
vases, candleholders, Tiffany-
style lamps shades, bronze
storks, colorful ceramic
statues, Oriental paintings,
sculpted wood statues, etc.
About Stephan Becharas,
he is the perfect host . . . talks
a Grecian Yiddish, whatever
that is, as he greets people in
a larger Yiddish vocabulary
than when he was on Thn
Mile . . . He's not lazy either
. . . busing tables when need-
ed, handing out menus, seat-
ing people,. working the cash
register and greeting folks in
his own inimitable way.
The food and service at
Gallery II is good . . . and
customers are almost certain
to see others they know .. .
It's family dining of the
highest order at reasonable
prices . . . Well-dressed and
casual-dressed diners mingle
with each other . . . Among

the customers are people who
could afford to buy the
restaurant and some who can
buy 50 or more of them.
Stephan is proud of his kit-
chen . . . and rightly so . . . If
you went in back and saw the
cleanliness and food being
prepared, you'd become a
regular Gallery customer .. .
This is a major portion of
Stephan Becharas' success
. . . In fact, some customers go
to see for themselves . . .
Stephan encourages their
visits . . . unlike a number of
other restaurateurs . . . The
ovens look like they weren't
being used . . . and freshly-
cooked and arranged food is a
tasty sight.
My waitress, Joan Miller, so
personable, courteous and
capable, brought me an ex-
cellent piece of fresh
whitefish . . . broiled in such
a very healthy way that not a
piece of skin is on the bottom
. . . and search as hard as I
did, not a bone was to be
found.
Others around me were
having scrod, broiled chicken,
etc. . . . One of the biggest
sellers is Stephan's tuna in
pita pocket which so many
folks enjoy.
Stephan kibbitzes with
customers . . . they love it .. .
he's like a long-lost friend to
so many . . . and a close friend
to others.
Gallery II is an enjoyable
place to eat because of the
ultra cleanliness,
friendliness, good food and
good service . . . an
unbeatable combination .. .
It's like dining in an actual
art gallery . . . being sur-
rounded by so much in-
teresting craft . . . each piece
cleaned at all times to go
along with Stephan's pen-
chant for cleanliness . . . like
the ovens used that day and
clean as an unblown whistle.
His salads are cold and
crisp . . . and attentive
waitresses make certain
everyone in their stations is
pleased . . . This is another
Stephan Becharas strong
leaning . . . Nothing is served
that the waitperson wouldn't
eat themselves . . . Dissatis-
fied customers, and there are
very few, receive immediate
replacement without any
qualms or questions asked.
Hours of Gallery II
Restaurant at Bloomfield
Plaza are 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Monday-Saturday, and 8 a.m.
to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
