Almost gratefully, we were
rounded up and escorted back
to our tent. As it turned out,
the search party that found
us was not even looking for
us. They were looking for pro-
wlers who had broken
through the camp gate. If
that weren't enough, one of
the counselors was smoking
in his tent and it burned
down, causing even more con-
fusion and bringing out even
more camp staff. Of all nights
to see adventure, this was the
worst. I've never been so hap-
py to see my bed.
We were not sent home
from camp, but as punish-
ment we were grounded from
all social activities, which
didn't bother Karen at all.
She was busy making plans
to marry Elvis. "Freddie
who?" she asked. I couldn't
believe it!
Well, I'm still afraid of
the dark. I'm still friends
with Karen. Karen is still
staying up late.
But now she is staying up
late worrying about the
daughter her mother wished
on her many years ago, when
in a fit of anger she said, "I
hope someday you have a
daughter just like you."
Now Rachel, who runs
rings around her mother, is
afraid of nothing. And Karen
is afraid only that Rachel will
find out what her mother was
really like. But she won't
hear all from me.
Blackmail is sweeter than
revenge. ❑

Demjanjuk
Trial Resumes
In Jerusalem

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
trial of suspected war
criminal John Demjanjuk
resumed in Jerusalem
district court last week after
a five-week recess.
The prosecution and
defense teams and the three-
judge panel had visited West
Berlin to hear testimony from
a former SS guard at Treb-
linka who identified Uk-
rainian-born Demjanjuk from
photographs as his fellow
guard known to inmates of
the death camp as "Ivan the
Terrible."
The prosecution is expected
to rest its case soon. Defense
lawyer Mark O'Connor said
he will need at least three
months to present testimony,
which may necessitate
another trip abroad to ques-
tion witnesses unable to come
to Israel.
